This was my second time purchasing these because they are so versatile. The first two sets I purchased maybe 5 years ago came in both large and small size inserts, with the small ones being the size of a plug (a large thumb). Before I started using these, I had a terrible track record with growing anything from seed, but having a steady water supply from the tray and higher humidity instantly boosted my success rate and confidence. Now, I have totally upgraded my set up with heat mats, lights, professional trays, etc. and have excellent germination of even challenging seeds. But, I still use these MIXC trays for some plants. Why? They’re perfect for germinating a smaller number of seeds, particularly if they are larger (cells are larger than standard plugs, allowing you to grow plants in the tray longer, either skipping the need to transplant to an intermediate pot or delaying it until your plant is larger and less vulnerable to transplant shock) or have different germination requirements than other seeds. They also make keeping track of what you’re growing a lot easier. Instead of using stake-style labels, I use a single sticker label or piece of masking tape for the entire tray. Lastly, while these lack the heft and durability of my other trays, the original set I bought years ago have been surprisingly durable. No cracking or tearing, not even the ones I’ve left outside. The fact that the inner tray is clear, thin plastic makes it easy to see how roots are developing and you can gently push plants out by collapsing the cell from the bottom.

These worked perfectly for growing peppers. I had lots of different hot pepper varieties that needed very specific humid needs so these were awesome for being able to control the humidity with the lid. Very lightweight and easy to move around. I liked the depth of each tray as it allowed for roots to get great formation. I paired these with a heating pad as I live in a colder climate and had no issues with getting almost every single seed to sprout. All in all after several months I managed to transfer 4-5 plants that had fully grown into producing plants. Very happy with how well these worked.

The trays are good - there is the layer where you plant the seeds, and that sits on top of another tray that catches the dripping water. My only question is - are the supplied lids supposed to snap on? Because they don't. In fact, they don't fit at all. They are larger than the trays so they aren't secured at all. I had to tape them down, and even then one lid blew off and was lost. I don't think I would buy again as I expected the pieces to fit together.

I love these seed starting trays! Super easy to assemble, extremely durable, and a great price! My seeds sprouted at an incredible rate due to the ability to adjust air flow. These seed starting trays are perfect and lightweight! They definitely make starting a garden from seeds easier and more fun!

Product as described. The inserts sit slightly off the bottom of the tray allowing you to fill it slightly so you can do bottom up watering, or just give it some extra water on a hot day once seeds established and your at work all day. They feel more durable then most of the locally acquired seed starting trays so I think you could easily get a few years out of them.
