This is a great book to learn the basics!
I bought this in soft cover book form back in 2011 and have enjoyed it greatly! Haven't tried the E book version. The reason I am writing this review now is that I noted a very bad review and thought I might take a moment to balance the scale some. That review said if you want to make crappy cheap jewelry for yourself or a gift that someone would just throw in the trash then this is the book for you because it only shows you how to make crappy cheap looking jewelry. Well, I don't have the latest version so I can't say what jewelry projects are in the newest version but if they are like mine, they are VERY basic. IF you have NO creativity and want a book that has step by step instructions on beautiful jewelry, full of designs with lists of everything you need....then NO this book isn't for you. BUT if you want to make and design your own jewelry but just don't know how to do it or the names and uses of the tools and materials.....then YES, you have found the RIGHT book! Each project may not be something you like BUT it is meant to teach you a certain set of skills using tools and materials that once mastered, you can THEN use those skills to design and make your own beautiful jewelry! The book is very easy to use and the photos are great. It has a wide variety of styles and materials to learn about. I still keep mine handy even after seven years, I will use it to refresh my memory if I haven't worked with certain tools or materials in awhile. Or if I forget the proper name of something. This is a great book for all ages, please give it a chance and enjoy creating your own masterpiece!Again, I can't comment on the E book version as I haven't tried it.

Uses white supremacist campaign button for design example
I purchased this book for my daughter and am very disappointed to see a campaign button for David Duke's 1991 run for Louisiana Governor used as the example for "The Art of Design". There are endless options that could be used to show color combinations and how they relate to putting together jewelry, but using this specific example is very problematic. If you aren't familiar with who David Duke is, here's a summary from wikipedia: "David Ernest Duke is an American white supremacist, far-right politician, convicted felon, and former Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. He has advocated Neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories like Holocaust denial and Jewish control of academia, the press, and the financial system."

COMPREHENSIVE~CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS~VISUALS
I’ve never made 1 pc of jewelry B4, but am SO excited to get started from this book. I would have included 3dz pix if possible to demonstrate just the clear & comprehensive instructions so I included the Table of Contents to give an idea of what to expect. The book’s beginning is all about materials, supplies, tools needed for specific styles of jewelry (including macrame & metalwork!); then it goes into basic techniques beading framework, clasps, earring forms, etc...; macrame & knitting techniques; and examples of specific jewelry styles which includes impressive preparation instructions of tools, supplies, materials needed! Couldn’t be happier with this book!

Most comprehensive jewelry-making book I've ever seen
The book I received doesn't match the cover image or ISBN number, but it's a fantastic book nonetheless. It's one of the most comprehensive books I've ever seen on jewelry making. The only thing I felt was missing was a quick how-to on how to make knotted sliding closures on cord jewelry. This was the book I received even though I ordered the one shown on this page: [(Teach Yourself Visually Jewelry Making and Beading )] [Author: Chris Franchetti Michaels] [Feb-2008 ] Maybe it's the same book with an updated cover and new ISBN.

From a complete NOVICE....This book does not disappoint.
I have always loved the Teach Yourself Visually series of books. This one does not disappoint. I am a novice and it works for me. It goes into details regarding the mystify world of wires! I thought the higher the number the harder the wire. Nope. The higher the number, the softer the wire. 14, 16 and 18 gauge wires are the wires for rings, necklaces, bangles and bracelets. The higher gauges are for jump rings (I learned what that was in this books as well!) and earring findings.

Love it
Great book! I've been making jewelry for two years plus and this book showed me some new ideas on how to and some other things I was doing the hard way in a much easier way to do them. Great tips. For novice or intermediate.

Great For Beginners
I have bought several books on making jewelry and I believe this is the best one by far. There are lots of large, clear, colour photos illustrating each step or tool, lots of charts to help you compare things such as size of beads, gauge of wire, typical lengths for bracelets and necklaces, etc. There is a well-designed appendix with additional information such as websites for books, magazines, videos and DVDs and other reference materials. Projects are arranged according to difficulty, starting with the easiest ones and moving on to the more challenging pieces, giving you a chance to practice your skills before launching into something more complicated. Although this book is highly recommended for beginners, it is also very useful for intermediate level craftspeople.

Very good book!!
Love this book!! It explains all the ways you can create jewelry!! Very well explained and the images help a lot!!!From basic wire work to bead weaving patters, stringing techniques, from easy projects to more advanced...They tell you what you need, and how to use it. They give you tips, step-by-step instructions...that even a newbie like me can do it!! What I like about it is that they explain to you, all the techniques out there ( bead weaving, wire, bead stringing, macramé) and so on!!! Don't regret buying this book at all!!!!

a nice beginer's guide
This is a fairly comprehensive book, with lots of data on the various aspects.I just wish they had included sources for the materials used in the pictures.Other than that, I was impressed by the extensive information.I would certainly recommend this for anyone who wants to get started in this kind of work.
