The Little Book of Mahjong: Learn How to Play, Score, and Win

Thank God for this wonderful little book! As anyone knows who is new to Mahjong, learning the game quickly becomes very overwhelming. There are so many versions of the game itself, so many subtle differences in gameplay, and understanding the scoring! Yikes!! Finding an understandable, logical and complete reference for a beginner can be a daunting task. Enter this book! Great size and hard cover, so it will serve well as a reference for many years to come. Fascinating summary of the game’s history and development over the years. It really helped me understand WHY so many variations of the game have arisen. And most of all, having clear, concise, well-diagrammed instructions for game setup, gameplay and scoring (win-or-lose, simplified, and international) makes everything a breeze for anyone brand new to the game. My only complaint is that I wish there were tile diagrams of all the special scoring hands, rather than just written descriptions. I might also suggest that the headings for the special hands include both the number of fan AND the number of points for clarity. Other than that, I could not be happier with this wonderful book and highly recommend it for anyone new to the exciting and enjoyable game of Mahjong!

This book is great to read while you learn (which is perfect for me because I am just a beginner). It also has excellent advice on what to discard - and why and when to do so. I'm sure it offers useful tips for experienced players as well. When I get there I might elaborate further!

This little book has history of Mahjong through the centuries. I have been playing for a few months and hoped for more information about rules, but she explains there are different versions in countries all the way down to individual games so it would be impossible to get every detail right.

Definitely recommend this if you want to learn either/both American mahjongg and Cantonese mahjongg
