Excellent and easily understood book on a fascinating subject
I am a recent student of geology and enjoyed this book because it illustrates in detail the movements of the continents over the history of the Earth

Highly recommended.
This is a most useful & readable account that would assist most people towards a better grasp of what is usually a conecptually difficult topic.

Extremely clear and concise book.
There can be no better introduction to plate tectonics and the paleo-geography of Britain. Superb.

... become interested in geology as a result of my love of hiking
A friend gave me this book to read because I have recently become interested in geology as a result of my love of hiking. While walking, I had often wondered what had created the topography and scenery of the British Isles and could barely remember what I had learned at school all those years ago.I initially thought that its contents would be beyond my comprehension, but my friend reassured me that I would enjoy reading it and would learn a lot from it. He was absolutely correct. This book is, ideal for the geologist because it is up-to-date, but due to its simplicity and the use of maps illustrating tectonic plate movements, it is also suitable for the amateur new to geology, who is keen to learn what it is all about—like me!The experiential description in each chapter, of what it would feel like to walk in the distant past and notice what you would see during each specific period, brought it all to life for me. That was exciting. My understanding of how the British Isles and Ireland—indeed all our continents and countries—came to be where and as they are today, has grown out of all proportion.Whether you are a geologist or not, this book is an excellent read, and I can highly recommend it to readers at all levels of geological knowledge.

An excellent book showing the palaeogeography of the British Isles and Ireland in maps.
This revue was received recently (November 2019) from a retired schoolteacher."I have just bought and read your 'Historical Geology in Maps'. What a clear, concise, simply superb book. I am a retired geology teacher and this is by far the best and clearest book on the subject. I love it!"This book is up to date, covering a subject that is very popular these days—plate tectonics and its impact on the developing geology of the British Isles and Ireland. What I like particularly about this book is the systematic way it approaches the subject. The plate tectonic maps are systematic, always showing global plate movement on the same map projections from the same viewpoints. This is much better than other books, which can be confusing; this book makes the subject clear, with a single map for each geological period from Cambrian to Quaternary. Similarly, with the main, detailed, maps of the British Isles and Ireland, the maps are clear, with one for each period from the Cambrian to the Quaternary. This coordination uniquely makes clear the relationship between plate migrations and the British Isles maps. I particularly liked the fact that each geological period map starts with a fictional description of what it would be like to stand on the ground at the time—fascinating and enjoyable. I would have allocated five stars if the maps had been in full colour, but I know that the book's price would have been doubled to do that. So, on balance I prefer the lower price - it is excellent value for money. I now understand a lot more about how our island developed with time. I also note that, for those only interested in plate tectonics, this author has also published a book entitled "Tectonic Plates - How the World Changed" which sells at £6.49 TECTONIC PLATES - How the World Changed
