Quick service, great music and a great piece of history which most people don't know.

Lots of blues and some gimmickry but the 1st and last cd make it worthwhile!
Most of us already have "Time Out", but if you don't then this is a steal. It's a steal anyway! The 3 'Time' albums following "Time Out" were a bit disappointing to me - more than half of the numbers are some type of 12 bar blues, (on one album this is intentional), and the composition quality is mediocre - in other words, good! but not up to Brubeck's normal level. Also, Paul Desmond takes a major back seat in these albums and is missed. Brubeck sounds more than a bit sloppy on a few tracks. The last album "Time In", however, is a huge leap in a positive direction with powerful, interesting melodies & ideas and brilliant usage of intriguing rhythms. I understand from some of the other reviewers that 1 or 2 of these albums haven't been released on cd before - so a boon for collectors. Regarding the mini album sleeves: they are indeed very fun and cool; but the liner notes on the back are so small they are literally impossible to read. This would get one less star from me, but it's got "Time Out" - one of the most enjoyable jazz albums of all time!!

A must -have for anyone serious about jazz
When I saw this set selling for $20 bucks, I wondered what was wrong with it. Now it's up to $27, which is still startlingly cheap. (I got mine at $20 and am listening to it now.)I plead guilty to lack of familiarity with Brubeck's music, outside of the almost-too-familiar Time Out/Take Five.Listening now to the albums that followed, I see how much I have been missing. These albums are often in a familiar Time Out groove, but they are surprisingly non-repetitive. Brubeck and his highly commercial record company resisted the temptation to repeat themselves for financial gain.Brubeck's own playing sounds more inventive and edgy on these albums than on his best-known one. The quartet is not afraid to startle people who probably used Take Five as cocktail party background music.Paul Desmond and Joe Morello are always worth hearing. Desmond, in fact, deserves to be included among the greatest of jazz virtuosos. That is evident on all these recordings. Eugene Wright is perhaps the least-famous of the four, but his bass playing is an indispensable part of the delightful proceedings. The "serious" jazz aficionadoes may like these later recordings a lot more than the jazz dabblers whose music collection includes Time Out as its only jazz selection.

What is there to say?
If there was one song, one piece of music, that could be solely responsible for "converting" me to Jazz, Take Five may be it. When I was young, in the 60's and 70's, I listened to what everybody else my age listened to. Now, we call it "Classic Rock". I don't know when, where, or why I first heard Take Five, but I know I must have been instantly hooked. It's one of those few pieces of music that I have to stop whatever I'm doing and listen to the whole thing. Every time. There are a lot of artists that have ups and downs in their work. I expected the same thing from The DBQ. But what I got was consistent listening pleasure. If you don't know much about DBQ, you need to get this set. It may be all you need, and you aren't going to get a better deal anywhere. If you know everything about DBQ, you need to get this set. The production quality is great, the price is great, the music is great.Gotta go... Take Five just came on.

Mr. "Cool Jazz"
I have never been into this genre of music...most of my jazz recordings (of which are few) are in the Miles Davis category. I learned, however, that my music education was sorely lacking. This is a great introduction to a man with a great sound. It reminds me of a simpler time...more upbeat, no 9/11s, no War on Terror, no craziness in the world...though there was, this music is inspirational and....in a Pollyanna kind of way, well, uplifting. The musical talent is good (not incredible), the compositional talent is, well, good...again, not incredible, but like a good team where everyone works together...the results are astounding. Brubeck isn't for everyone, but I'm a new fan.

Plenty of soul
For too long, I passed on Dave Brubeck: white guy playing his quirky version of jazz, didn't fit in with my tastes in Miles, Coltrane or Monk, blah blah blah... I bought this set not long after his death, and all I can say is, what a boob I was. Some of the cuts are a little weak, this isn't gold from end to end, but neither are those big box sets by those other guys. The real treat is "Time In". The album is a gem of blues and soulful playing that should debunk the common prejudices jazz listeners have about Dave Brubeck and his quartet.

I'm not an audiophile or a pretentious critic but I do enjoy good music and this collection is just that
Goodness, I'm not an audiophile or a pretentious critic but I do enjoy good music and this collection is just that. Played in the car (Fender, HK, or Bose audio) or house (Marantz receiver with Theil 3.5 speakers or Onkyo receiver with Pinnacle legacy speakers) these discs sound great to me. They are a great value as well. I do have some of the original LP's and the LP's do out shine these but it's a trade off I can live with.

It's a bargain..
This is a great set of CDs nicely presented. It's exactly what you expect from Sony, excellent sound quality and extremely good value for money. If all you have heard is Take Five this box set is a great way to explore Dave Brubeck's catalogue, you will not be disappointed.

loads of muzak
I liked most of whats on offer here but when listening one after the other i'm finding it a little hard going, none of it is as good as the well known track Take Five. The drumming on this track is some of the best recorded i've heard anywhere on any platform.
