Nostalgic fun - and these do work!
For decades I've kept a "John Wayne can opener" along on a keyring - usually just the smaller P-38 version - in mostly-fond memory of an old vet buddy who always did. For sure, the larger version is noticeably easier to use to open a can. But I got used to the smaller (original?) and have found other lite functions for mine in mundane awkward situations. Though the thing is far from a multitool, prying, poking, and scaping have happened. Just because this was right there to grab in case it would do, I'd give it a go.But CAUTION, these can snag knitted garments or bare hands (somehow I've learned to avoid these annoyances). AND some TSAs just might request surrendering, despite no blade and though can-openers are allowed in carry-ons last I checked the list. (Of course, it's happened, but more often it's passed, but oh well, usually these are pretty inexpensive.)

The Shelby Secret Weapon Against Sealed Goods
These little US Shelby can openers – the P-38 and its slightly bigger sibling, the P-51 – feel like they mean business. Solid stainless steel, stamped with that classic 'US Shelby Co.' mark, they're a no-nonsense pair. Forget fancy gadgets; these are the real deal. The included chains keep them handy, ready to tackle a can whether you're camping or just need a reliable opener in your kitchen drawer. They even pull double duty as a makeshift flathead in a pinch. Simple, robust, and with a touch of that old-school military vibe – these aren't just can openers, they're tiny tools built to last. This review represents my personal opinion and experience with this product. FOND MEMORIES
Very pleased the quality and the delivery time involved. O, do I remember using these when I was in Army BasicTraining, especially out in the field. If you wanted to open any canned rations these were about the only way inwhich you could do it. They were also known as P-38's then, and they still call them that. They come in handy,as they are small and don't take up hardly any space and extremely portable and very study. And thank-you forincluding the beaded chains to go with them.
