Common Core Math Grade 1 Daily Practice Workbook

I have a firstgrader and after first marking was over, I realized that homework she brings from school is way too simple. She does week worth of exercises in 20 min. However, the way school guides kids through math learning by providing 1-2 sheets printouts for homework and sort of “fun” coloring based activities simply doesn’t promote consistency and repetition that prepares kids to higher level math problems. I was looking into simple exercises workbook that my kids can do in addition to school homework and these series was perfect choice. This book in my daughter backpack and she does day worth of math problems either on the bus or while in aftercare and then I review at home and go over material when needed.

Got this book to teach my kids the common core math problems, not to teach him math. That is important to understand. He is very good at math because he is also home schooled. But he was taught traditional real math. In school they do these common core problems, which is a strange way to do things. Anyway, so, this book is good for learning how to do the class room problems, but if you want to learn actual traditional math, you'll need another book as well or you'll need to make your own traditional math worksheets.

I chose this book for word problem practice. It has really good questions but the equations are given right after question, defeating the entire purpose letting the student work out the word problem on their own. I will be using post it arrows to cover up the equations.

My daughter is in kindergarten and needs some math practice. This book helps us do that. I tried four math books and this one is the best. It is also the only one she could do. It has a good number of practice questions. One thing that is really good about this book and Argo is that the lessons have video tutorials. When I travel for work I can work the problems with her by Skype or Facetime. This enables us to plan a few precious minutes to interact when I am not home.

I like the way the test is set up to work on a page each day. The print and pages are nice. My complaint is the varying level of skill the workbook targets. For example, on week 1, day 1, they’re already working on algebra (15-x=7)? And day 5 is counting objects (shows 9 guitars). My kids just finished Kindergarten and so I wanted them to get a head start on 1st grade math concepts this summer. This book isn’t a good transition for them as far as what concepts they were last working on in Kindergarten. But maybe it’s because their math program is different. Anyway, we’ll use this book here and there but I found the Go Math 1st grade book better provides a systematic approach to mastering each concept starting at end of year Kindergarten all the way through the end of 1st grade.

My daughter loves the math word problems. She is still in kindergarten and some of the math is still a little hard for her. That is why we go over the exercises together and once I explain it to her, she likes solving the problems. I actually like the part that the math problems are challenging and are not too easy. I would recommend this book!

I used this one for my kid and love the content and the flow from easy to harder content. Good amount of practice before moving to the next chapter. I am looking for another 1st grade math practice book and so far this is the best.
