Barron's ACT Math and Science Workbook

I teach high school English and have done so for many years. I've lost my math reasoning because I don't use it on a daily basis. I bought this book to help my students prepare for ACT in two subjects I don't know well. This book has clear explanations of the concepts to be tested. I've bought a LOT of ACT prep books, but, because this one is so focused on just two subjects, it's more helpful than most.Beyond teaching, however, I recommend that people read outside their comfort zone. Emerging research about Alzheimer's disease indicates that "keeping an open mind" to reading in multiple genres improves pathways in the brain. (I'm sure that could be worded better by an expert.)

From the student's perspective: I used this book to refresh myself on ACT math (my science score was already very high). While it's does a decent job of breaking down how to tackle problems in the lessons, it does not offer enough practice problems for the content learned to stick. After working through much of the math portion's lessons and practice problems, my math score went down 1 point when I tested again. I was disappointed to say the least. I have been able to raise my score with thorough and frequent practice using the Real ACT prep guide and old "preparing for the ACT" booklets that are available online for free: they consist of real ACT tests with the same type of problem you see on the real test.Additionally, the lack of practice tests is horrendous. I like to say that it includes half of a test: one math section and one science section. It might be a ploy to encourage customers to purchase other Barron's ACT books, but without additional practice tests, students cannot work on pacing themselves specifically for the math (or science for that matter) section.

This was really useful personally. I think it's what help me get 30. The science section used to be really tough but these tips helped me through it.

Could use more examples and practice tests. Fortunately this isn't the only study guide I ordered for my daughter. It is a decent book, don't get me wrong. I just think it's a good idea to have another study source as well.

I bought this book to help my son prep for ACT. It has helped him tremendously. Especially with math problems. I would not take the test unless we had prepared with this wonderful book.

My daughter wanted it to study only the science material but this one comes with Math too. She is using it and thus far seems to like it.
