Not quite for rank beginners
Good book that covers the basics but I would encourage rank beginner bridge players like me to take a lesson with a good teacher who will make the game ccome alive. The book made much more sense to me after I had one lesson from a dynamic teacher (Gail Greenberg) who explained the game's goals in terms that I could understand--bridge is like a war where you and your partner are allies and where communications are limited.

Beginners Bridge
The book is pretty comprehensive, but, as a stark beginner and a very, very senior citizen, the old noodle doesn't absorb as it used to. When it got to rebidding and conventions, I got lost and confused. I'll try a class for beginners and use the book as a refresher..... if that doesn't work, it's back to solitaire for me.

Very good book for new players
I've always thought William Root's books were very good, so I was glad to see his new offering. I'll be using in a small class for beginning players. It is so important to get new players off on the right foot, and it is far too easy to scare them away with too many gadgets or an unreadable book. The system the book teaches is a fairly standard modern system, although my opinion is that limit raises in majors should now be viewed as standard (the book mentions limit raises, but advises people to begin with forcing raises). That's a pretty small and debatable issue in an otherwise excellent book.

Good place to start.
Having been away from Bridge for 30 years I recently began to work my way back into the game. Needless to say the game has continued to evolve and it was very helpful to find a book to aid in getting up to speed on many of the current methods.

Finally, exciting and clear instruction in this vexing game!
I've played a little bridge since childhood (balmy summers in Florida, circa 1963), became interested again during college, and episodically pick up games during holidays and beach vacations. I've never had coherent instruction -- with every iteration I always seem to need to start from scratch. If you can relate to my experience I guarantee Root's ABC's of Bridge will not only enhance your understanding of this game, but infuse new confidence and enjoyment. A great book.

A must have book for Bridge Player's
I purchased two books -- one for a friend learning to play and one for myself as a resource. This book is well organized, easy to read and understand. It describes basic principles that are followed in todays Duplicate or Party Bridge circles.

Great Bridge Book
There are thousands of Bridge teachers and hundreds of Bridge books on the market. I have several in my bookcase. However, The ABC's of Bridge tops them all. If you are a beginning player or have master's points this book will have something to tell you. I am trying to spark an interest in Bridge in someone I know. I've given her a copy of The ABC's of Bridge. I have my own copy from the days I was just starting to learn the game. It is the best book of Bridge that I know of.
