Transparent USB Hub
This was my 3rd purchase of the D-Link DUB-H4 4-port hub. The first two are attached to my home computer with 7 of the 8 ports in use, connecting external hard drives (3), DVD burner, and other assorted USB devices. I've never had any problems with the hubs, which kind of makes them disappear - you don't think about a hub being there when it does its job! This latest purchase was for the PC at church. I recommended it because of my good experience with this particular hub (I've had problems with other USB hubs over the years). It now connects the two printers whereas, in the past, they had to plug in only the one printer that was in use at the time due to a shortage of USB ports on this old PC. Working great just as expected.

Not worth the chance
Worked fine for a few months then when moved to another computer, the thing had some kind of surge in electricity (even though it was on an APC and fried a hard drive and soolic state devices!

Great for desktops.... less so for notebooks
I purchased this after reading the reviews for a number of USB hubs (really!) I can't use my iPod and 2.5" WD Passport at the same time as my USB mouse & flash drive on the notebook (just two USB ports, both 2.0), and so the purchase...1. Long USB cable works nicely for desktops, but do I want to carry that around? It might be useful for notebooks with recessed USB ports, but read on....2. My external DVD writer, 3.5" external HDD work fine w/o the hub powered because they have their own power adapters. My self-powered WD Passport 2.5" HDD and iPod need the power cable to be plugged in. My USB1.1 Lexar flash drive works without the hub powered (mobile for the low-power-draw devices). So: great for desktops, but not particularly mobile.3. Tested my USB2.0 3.5" external HDD plugged in parallel to the USB1.1 flash drive - both work as expected. USB2.0 - 184 MB in ~1/2 minute, USB1.1 - 4 MB in less time. As another reviewer pointed out, probably depends on the device. This test was without the hub powered (note: not the USB-powered WD 2.5" HDD).4. The two-pin power adapter is as thick as a three pin plug, but wide. So it will work fine when the flat pins are parallel to the length of the strip, but the adapter will block the adjoining sockets with the flat pins perpendicular to the strip. I have both types of power strips!Bottom line: it works great with my desktop and my notebook when docked. However, my search for a mobile USB hub continues.

Best External USB Hub
What a great 4 port external hub! My friends and I had problems with everyPCI card hub regardless of manufacturer or where made, on any computer asthey make them so cheap and must not test for compatibility. This productdocumentation does not say it is compatible with Windows 98 or ME. Thishub is I guarantee it.Install the hub with the computer off and the hub powered up. Boot up andthe new hardware is found as Generic USB Hub. The correct driver install is on your Windows disk, Generic USB Device. The choice of the Windows 95 driver as a selection by DLink is wrong, use the other one on your screen insert Windows 98 or ME disk then load it.Restart your computer to complete the install. When rebooting you'll see on your screen "USB Device(s): Hub" under NVRAM. Under Device Manager youwill see it as "Generic USB Hub" below Universal serial bus controller. This hub needs its own 5VDC power adapter supplied to run the firmware onboard. It is 100% compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0 and needs no software. What a wonderful device! If only everything worked this well. Throw everyPCI hub card you have in the garbage and get this great external hub!

Works as it says it will
This is the second purchase I've made this year from Amazon for which the price dropped almost before it was delivered. I just paid $22.00 for the hub only to find that on the day I received it the price is cut significantly. I should return it for a refund and buy one at the sale price...not fair Amazon! The D-Link hub is like most D-Link devices, it does what it says it will and does it well. It's an attractive addition to the desktop or wherever and the ports are spaced wide enough to accommodate several jump drives without crowding. The power plug is large but it's not a brick and will share most power strips comfortably. The lighted power-on and active ports feature is a plus for me and both the power cord and the USB cord are several feet long making it much easier to connect. I did not find anything to suggest that plugging a USB 1.1 device in will drop the through rate for all devices to 1.1...the 1.1 device will run at 1.1 speed but I don't see anything to suggest the 2.0 devices will drop in speed too. Yes, having to be plugged in is inconvenient when traveling but then the laptop has to be too if doing any real work and I appreciate that it isn't sapping power from my computer. It's small and light enough to easily fit into a laptop case but there are smaller, albeit less, powerful hubs one can use for traveling. Now if Amazon would send me a refund on the price differential I would really be happy!

Good hub but problems...
I have used other d-link equipment in the past and have had good luck. Bought this to connect 2 National Instruments USB-6008 DAQ modules to my laptop. Everything seemed to connect well and I was clad this came with the power supply. The problem came when I ran the modules and kept locking up windows (XP Pro) to the point of requiring a reboot. The problem was very repeatable and I finally traced it to this hub after swapping it out for another simple USB hub (from Dynex) that worked well. Probably fine for most applications but definately NOT with NI USB hardware!

Seems fine.. but came with European power adapter
It's tiny and seems to work just plugged in to my laptop for low power stuff, but I bought this because I needed a hub that would provide its own power independent of the USB port it's plugged into. It came with a power adapter with a continental European plug! I ordered this in the US from a US seller. Buyer beware.
