Not really that impressive!

While Peter's book Seeking Wisdom is a must read, and in fact I have gotten multiple copies to give to friends and family. I was disappointed in this title. The book consistents of quotes followed by lines from different Holme's books and there are some sayings from other experts as well.It was a quick/short read but I didn't find it that useful, if you are looking to think more like Sherlock or learn how to do things he did then I suggest you check out Ben Cardall's The Monographs. It's available on Amazon and that book is really about ways you can learn to do things like Sherlock Holmes. The book is not a popular title but it's full of AMAZING INSIGHTS. The only thing I hate about Ben's book is that its all over the place with no sub-headings or proper chapters but the content itself is GOLD!

Short Book, Big Thoughts

Peter Bevelin’s short book is a compendium of quotes from the stories of Sherlock Holmes, other writings by Arthur Conan Doyle, and some writings of Doyle’s contemporaries. Before each set of quotes, Bevelin identifies a theme, such as “Practice is a good instructor and teaches us to where to look and what to look for”. (Bevelin, Peter (2013-06-24). A Few Lessons from Sherlock Holmes (Kindle Locations 156-157). MX Publishing. Kindle Edition.) The quotes, primarily from stories of Holmes, then illustrate or elucidate the theme. Perhaps that second most commonly cited source comes from Thomas McCrae, who published a work in a Canadian medical journal in 1914 titled “The Method of Zadig in the Practice of Medicine”, which discusses many of the themes common to Holmes’ methods. This short (65-page) book is a compendium of wisdom that one can dip into at random to reinforce an inquiring and questioning mind. Its single sentence themes and brief quotes make it like a commonplace book. In its themes and conclusions (and often in its selections of quotes from the Holmes treasury), it’s very similar to Maria Konnikova’s Mastermind:How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes. But where Bevelin limits his quotes to Holmes and his contemporaries, Konnikova riffs into contemporary research and thought. Both are valuable and fun—how could they not be when led by the great detective?

The Empirical Skeptic

I am an amateur student of decision making under uncertainty, and although I enjoyed Sherlock Holmes in my younger days, I never really made the connection between the stories , empirical skepticism and how to make decisions with partial information. I am simultaneously ashamed and excited to now reread all the classic cases of Arthur Conan Doyle's fine penmanship. This is much more than a collection of quotes, it is a way to learn the powers of observation, understand the limits of our mind and counter the narrative fallacy with what else? A narrative.Wonderful and enjoyable book on so many levels. A book that will be reread many times

Know how to use this

The author writes a sentence that expresses a thought like Look at a problem backwards, then uses quotes from Sherlock Holmes (and some other books) to provide support/examples. Small book but good thought topics.

Mastering the decision processes

This little book is intended to an audience who wants to learn methods to make decisions more skillfully, i.e. train the mind to decide under uncertain states of nature (the real world). Holmes makes evident that in order to achive a better understanding of the state of the nature, one needs to master the use of the information available and deduction processes. I highly recommend it!

An enjoyable annotation of Sherlock Holmes's work

This was an enjoyable read. The author highlights various quotes from different works featuring the character of Sherlock Holmes (and a number of other sources which it would be quite interesting to track down) to illustrate various lessons. As I said, my dear Watson, a most edifying little read thoroughly rich in lessons for the rational, scientific mind.

Had a good begining....

I enjoyed the first few chapters and then it just became too technical and repetitive.

A wonderful book for Sherlockians!

A great summary of the words of advice to be found in various Sherlock Holmes related books including the canon itself. As a life-long Sherlock fan, I found this book rich in wisdom and enjoyed it very much!

No lessons just quotes

Before purchasing it I thought this book would include at least very well-commented quotes from the Sherlock Holmes stories. I actually expected thought-provoking essays due to the word „lessons“ in the title. But unfortunately this is just a collection of quotes from the Sherlock stories and from various (non-fictional) people who had some connection with Sir Arthur Connan Doyle. If the book‘s title would have been something like „Sherlock Quotes for Sherlock Fans“ I would give it five stars because that title would tell everybody what the text is about. But „A Few Lessons from Sherlock Holmes“ is rather misleading.

The wisdom of Sherlock Holmes

I got from this book what I expected by reading the backpage. Not a summary of the Sherlock Holmes stories but some timeless principles for clearer, rational thinking. Although this book contains only 82 Pages it should be read carefully to think about the principles and soak them in. I enjoyed it and will surely re-read it.

Interesting compilation of quotes

I am a big fan of both Peter Bevelin and Mr. Sherlock Holmes which makes me a biased reviewer. Nevertheless, I still believe that Peter Bevelin's "Seeking Wisdom" is his most important work, a true "must have".
