Great math start story!

I love reading this book when we get to subtraction in kindergarten. It is also located on you tube. I read first, then we watch the video and the lesson begins. I would recommend this book to K-1 teachers.

Magical Elevator Ride Captures Picky Reader's Attention

Purchased for an autistic 10-year old boy, this book had everything he could want. Child loves elevators and math, so when I saw this book available, I was very happy. The story is a very simple telling of a child and mother taking a ride in the elevator down floor by floor to increasingly silly departments. I loved the 'Farmers Bank' where the elevator opens onto a field with a teller's desk in it and cows in the background. The only drawback is the description of the way in which the lower levels are achieved. It says something like 'we are going down two floors and we are at the eighth floor. What number should we push'. (I'm paraphrasing.) The wording might be confusing to some children. Fortunately, they also put a math equation (8-2 = 6) and drew a button panel on the matching page with swoops counting out the number of buttons to count down to get the right number. So, it has a visual support to the more complicated verbiage. My son actually sits still to read along with this book and loves to 'push' the button on the page. A recommendation I would make is to turn this into a digital book or an app for the iPad so that children could see the effects of an elevator and hear the sounds that accompany the actions.

Cute Elevator Book, Though Leaves Something to Be Desired

My son is autistic and has a fascination with elevators, however there is a real dearth of elevator-related kids' books out there! I combed Amazon for some and came across this one. He really likes it and asks to read it often, and the illustrations are cute. The big drawbacks are that it is the kind of large, floppy paperback binding that is a little difficult for a toddler to maneuver without ripping the pages, and that the rhyme scheme occurs on only every other page (when the child actually arrives at a floor). I also wish it was a bit longer and covered more floors (it's a very short read). It's a solid choice for a kid who is into elevators, though not *amazing*. If you're looking for a book about elevators and counting for a younger demographic, I'd recommend finding an old copy of the Sesame Street elevator book, Going Up! (Going up with Grover: A counting book).

Elevator Magic Review

I love reading this book to my 1st grade students when we are learning about subtraction. It is a fun book and teaches the concept of subtraction by using the elevator numbers like a number line. This book would be a welcome addition to any primary classroom!
