Great multifunction pen
I had one of these twenty years ago (and lost it) and replaced the ink with Schmidt cartridges because the original were so difficult to write with. This one however, writes very well. Though it is a larger pen (not quite double), it is easy enough to manoeuvre. This writes smoothly and cleanly. I like the weight and find this build quality very good. As for value for the money- it depends. obviously a Uni Jestream trio is cheaper, but this is not plastic and should last longer. Just keep your eye on it- someone might try to pinch it.

Love this pen enough that I bought a 2nd one
Back in the mid-nineties, I had bought a multi-color pen similar to this and loved it. Unfortunately, at some point, I misplaced it and the company I bought it from (FranklinPlanner) no longer carried it. I spent the next 20+ years searching on and off for a replacement, which I happened to finally come across earlier this year.I've since used this model pen at least several times a day. While it doesn't write as nicely as any of my fountain pens or gel pens, it's still usually the first one I reach for when I need to write something down since I can use the different colors to highlight and emphasize what I'm writing. If you want a nice-looking, solid, everyday pen to write with, I'd say you couldn't go wrong with getting this one

Expensive but high quality
I have been using this writing tool for the past several months. its quality is obvious and all of its component pieces fit together perfectly. It has a nice weight to it but I don't think its too heavy. Also I was a little worried about its diameter and how well it would fit into my hand. Its really not much bigger than my other mechanical pencils and does not at all feel awkward. The selection method works great and I can always select which pen or pencil I want. I actually took the thing apart to understand how it works. Retract the nib by pulling up on the clip. It is spring loaded and makes a nice click when it retracts or extends. To select a pen or pencil retract the nib and then place the tool in a horizontal position and rotate it until the picture of the pen/pencil you want is facing up. Then just push the plunger and out comes the selected nib. This tool is so well built I expect it to last for my lifetime. I am happy with my purchase and I would buy it again.

Convenient, but some of the included ink was already starting to dry out.
This is a very convenient writing utensil to have around. As a diligent note taker, I often like to change ink colors to denote different items that I jot down. I also like to have a pencil around for writing information down that I might want to change. Having all these features in one pen is fantastic. That said, the included ink cartridges (pre-filled in the pen) were already starting to degrade. I've used this pen now for a few weeks, and while I was hoping for some improvement in ink flow and color depth with use, that was not the case (Seen in the included picture, the ink fades periodically during continuous movements) . For the price, I was hoping the pen would have been better stored; just something as basic as a plastic sleeve, or maybe include a set of free refills that are packaged and sealed properly. But the packaging was just a cardboard Rotring branded box with an informational insert.I really enjoy Rotring products, and I've been using the 800 for a few years now. I was unfortunately slightly disappointed by this one. I'm sure if it were freshly packaged, I would have been happier.

D1 refills don’t work well or last long
This pen does have the paint and metal start to fade in less then a week. My mechanical pencil gets stuck and all the lead constantly breaks. The mechanism catches all the time. D1 refills hold like 1/10 of a pen. Gel pens are like a paragraph. The pressing of the clip makes my thumb hurt. Look at the complaints. D1! How can it possibly hold any amount of ink. It gets stuck CONSTANTLY. The paint chipping is real. It’s heavy. Refills are $4. This is the worst purchase. Build quality. Bad. The value of refills. Bad. The finish and paint. Bad. The weight. Bad. The refills are as thick as a toothpick and 2 inches long. How?? How can this be a usable pen as far as laws of reality?? It probably weighs as much as a calculator but in the shape of a pen. All these things are in other reviews. Smoothness: It can’t write smooth. Ease of use: It gets stuck and lead breaks and it’s heavy and the retraction clip is stiff. Ease of everything is bad. Expensive. So expensive. $45 and then $4 refills for a page of A6. It’s trash. Everyone is going to think I am just mad but it’s frustrating. It can’t pass a trial of 10 people. No way its 4.4 stars. What do they like about it? What is even designed to work on it? This is waste like a styrofoam cup or a $2 phone stand. I didn’t buy things for the ocean creatures to get stuck in.
