Pretty cool. My son used this in school and loved it. We bought it for him for Christmas. He’s made video game controllers with it using pencil and paper and fruit. No clue what he he’s going but he love it.

One hour in, and this is a WOW! I debuted it with four teen-age girls having a slumber party, and they were engaged and impressed. It's certainly science/engineering in action. I heard several say they want it for Christmas. That said, it remains to be seen whether this will have any staying power -- I'll try to report back and see if this stays in the rotation or gathers dust. The product is easy to use right out of the box, except for one thing: I'm on a Mac, and I got a weird error message about how it couldn't detect the keyboard (it sees the Makey Makey as a keyboard). The instructions and MM site were no help, but somebody said on a blog just to ignore that message, which I did, with success. Last thing, and I feel bad even saying this, but it comes in such a small box that it seems to be of less value than it actually is. I hate gigantic, unnecessary packaging, but on the other hand, the small box suggests that it is an item of less value. BTW, I bought the kit on sale for $40. The list price says $70. I felt good about paying $40, but glad I didn't pay $70.

When I first saw the announcement video for this product, I brushed the Makey Makey off as gimmicky and toyish. But having used it for about a month, I have to admit that this kit is far more impressive than I expected. The setup between the Makey Makey and your computer is quick and straightforward, but the real creativity and challenge comes from figuring it out how to use it for pretty much anything that can be run on your computer. I can easily spend a few hours messing around with the various configurations on this device to get it to work perfectly with whatever I have it hooked up to and all of those hours will be spent with my mind working at full speed and a huge grin on my face. Really, the only gripe I have with this kit is that the device's cable limits the freedom of movement and range you have on it. But there's really no way around that unless you buy a Bluetooth adapter of sorts. For now, keep your inventions close to your computer and you should have no problems. If you're interested in tinkering around with computer devices, don't hesitate to pick this up. It's an awesome tool that's disguised as a toy.

Made for a very interesting and unique gift that requires a little bit of work, creativity, and imagination that I think is needed these days. My niece wanted this and I had no idea what it was so I researched it a little and was surprised that she knew what this was and wanted it. While there are a lot of ways to play with this at its base it is fairly simple and easy to learn and use. I appreciate that it combines gaming and electronics with a little bit of learning, creativity, imagination and inventiveness. I gave it only 4 stars because I don't think this is for everyone. If you're planning to buy this for a present, you should really see if this is the kind of thing that person/child wants. If you think someone might like it as a gift they might also need someone to show them the kind of fun they can enjoy with this. It is an interesting concept and the possibilities are near limitless but I think anyone that hasn't researched the Makey Makey at all and are considering it for a gift, to really read into what it is and what it can be. The price is a little steep in my opinion at about $50. I think $35-$40 would have been a sweet spot but it is well made and designed and I have no issue spending a little more to support innovative ideas. I can happily recommend this.

I'm a high school physics teacher, so I bought one of these for our chapter on electricity and electronics. My students never enjoyed anything as much as they enjoyed the makey makey. We made a graphite controller for pac man like they show in the video. Very fun and very educational. The kids in class would always be trying to come up with different things we could do with it, and it turns out that the cheese sticks they get at lunch make a perfect material to connect it to! One of the kids in class who can play the piano played it using the cheese sticks and we made a video that we used to promote our science demonstration show. It was a huge hit. We also went to the elementary school and did a few activities with it. Imagine hooking a a group of 2nd graders up to this and making them the keys for the piano. Just have one kid hold the ground and they can touch the other kids on the hand to play the piano. It blows their mind and they go crazy about it and want to learn how it works. What you can do with this is only limited by your imagination.

Purchased this for our 12 year old daughter. She has enjoyed it though it doesn't always work as well or easily as we hoped. Sometimes we have to fuss with the ground connection quite a bit to get consistent response. I also think that it is not a great value in retrospect. You are basically paying $50 for a partial USB keyboard that probably costs $10 to $20 if you bought an actual keyboard. That said there is decent educational value and opportunity for creativity. However for almost the same money you could buy a Raspberry Pi computer which allows much much more functionality and capability. In retrospect I probably would have steered her in that direction first.
