Absolutely Amazing!
This gadget works really well to reduce the volume of a double bass. The difference in volume is quite noticeable. The tone of the bass is still usable for practice. The device basically disconnects the string vibration transference to the sound chamber via the bridge. For some reason that I can't understand, if I plug my piezo pickup into my amp while this mute is on the bridge I get nothing but feedback.

Prefect practice mute for double bass
Works great for reducing the volume of my double bass. It reduces the volume by about half, which makes me practicing scales and etudes more bearable for my wife. This practice mute suits my needs just fine, and could even be used to protect the bridge when transporting a bass around. I can reduce the volume of my bass even further by clamping some cheap spring clamps to the bridge of my bass during practice. I got some spring clamps for a dollar each at the local hardware store. Just an idea if you need to be particularly quiet when practicing.

Greatly decreases your practice volume!
It greatly decreases the volume of the bass. No, it does not actually mute the bass which is a good thing or how else would you be able to practice. It removes the fundamental low resonation tones that resonate through the body of the bass cavity and diminishes or limits the amount of low and mid frequencies that carry through walls etc. It sounds a little funky when I practice with it on with but when I remove it, it's really nice to hear the results with the mute off! Also note: this is a "practice mute" and is not intended to be used a performance mute. Overall effective!

Works well
I moved to an apartment and this in combination with a foam insulated endpin pad I made has saved me. I estimate the mute reduces volume by about 50%. Don't remember how much I paid, but I do recall it seemed a bit expensive for a piece of rubber...

The best bass practice mute
This mute is fantastic, and I'm on my third one in 30 years. Really dampens the sound and makes practicing possible when you need to lower the volume. Don't expect it to be incredibly quiet though. When I need this I also stuff foam in the f-holes.

What can I say, it makes it more quiet!
Don't expect it to be a night-and-day difference, but if you A and B with and without the mute, there is a considerable difference in volume, which changes your practice session (at least in your roommate's eyes) from being "Oh god, not Jeff practicing his bass again. I would rather hear a lawnmower eat gravel", to "Hey, this is moderately tolerable!" It's a nice solution, if only a medium difference in volume.

Two Stars
Too inflexible to fit standard 3/4 bridge, too large. Does not mute sound.

so mot worth it
absolute waste of money I figured since all the reviews(or at least most of them) were positive i'd go for it this mute changes the sound but does not mute the bass maybe if you bought two of them and pinched your strings together it would mute the bass but other than that it doesn't do the job its probably best to get an electric upright bass if you want silenceand PS it would have been nice not to have to go on youtube to see how to use the mute properly
