Vietgone

Funny, engaging, and enduring read!
Vietgone was an incredible joy to read! I am a college student and was forced to read this for my theater class but it turned out to be a very fun and enjoyable read. It is formatted to be somewhat of a mix-up between theater and hip-hop through rap and dancing and it was very engaging. It focuses on the love story between two Vietnamese people that found each other despite their broken pasts from the Vietnam War. It was a very funny, easy-to-read story. It is similar to Hamilton the musical in the sense that it introduced more modern themes such as hip-hop and rap to an established traditional medium such as a play. If you love Hamilton, love rap, and love an interesting, unique love story, this is the book for you!

Great Modern Play
This play has been performed in theaters around the USA. I was interested in the script because I discovered my husband is a character in the play! In 1975 as Skipper of the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVA 41) he was in command during Operation Frequent Wind, the Navy helicopter evacuation of Vietnam. The protagonist in Vietgone is a South Vietnam Air Force Captain who lands his helo there during the Evacuation. In the play, although not in real life, he has a conversation with the Captain. After reading the script, we attended the play and we loved it. It is funny, moving and well worth reading/seeing. It may change your view of the Vietnam War.

Difficult to visualize staging. Don't feel script written for high school program.
Not written for high school program. Not as intense as synopsis suggests. Lots of location changes.

Innovative but non-stop nasty language
Great subject matter! A powerful story that needs to be told! And I applaud the innovation but wow does it pile on the potty humor ....and every noun, verb, and adjective is the f word...after awhile the schtick gets old.
