A double-bill of sci-fi horror. In John Carpenter's “The Thing” (1982), a research team in the Antarctic, led by R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell), discovers a spaceship buried beneath the ice, and becomes terrorized by the shape-changing monster that is housed within. In the 2011 prequel, the action is set on a research site in Antarctica three days before the action of the original story, the film focusing on the Norwegian camps that were the initial target of the alien invasion. When they discover an alien spacecraft on the site, science graduate Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and experienced researcher Dr Sander Halvorson (Ulrich Thomsen) disagree about how to act. When Dr Halvorson refuses to abandon his research, Kate teams up with tough Vietnam veteran Sam Carter (Joel Edgerton) to pursue the alien intruders by helicopter. Love the 1982 film/ Dont care for the prequel
Im giving this 5/5 stars solely because of the 1982 film. It's filled with a lot of suspense and I love the cast! I don't care for that prequel film though.

Awesome Movies!!
Love both these movies! Obviously, the original is a classic, but the 2011 prequel is also a great companion piece. Great set.

Follow the clues
You need to see all three movies, to appreciate the plot, these two you watch the 2011 first, then the 1982 version, great for movie night.

Great entertainment via great storytelling
Minimal special effects. Relies on real moviemaking with actors and good writing. May not be for audience used to being entertained by cgi. Cook up some popcorn n drinks and enjoy. The 2011 Thing was a good prequel too.

A Holiday Classic
'The Thing' is a John Carpenter horror / science fiction movie from 1982. If you're a fan of early 80s horror movies in general, or of John Carpenter movies from the early 80s in particular, you'll probably like this movie-- and you probably already knew that without having to read this review. For the rest of you, though, I'd explain the film like this: an alien shape-shifter has infiltrated a remote Antarctic base, impersonating the researchers there one at a time, causing them to distrust each other and creating psychological tension which runs throughout the whole movie. The special effects and set were all created using practical effects-- this was before the days of CGI-- and while everything looked great to audiences in 1982, the film requires today's audiences to be a bit more forgiving. That isn't to say that 'The Thing' is just another 80s schlocky gore-fest, because the plot and writing were taut enough to keep audiences engaged without a lot of heavy-handed effects, but it is what it is. Is it Shakespeare? No, but 'The Thing' is a guilty pleasure. I watch it every holiday season-- my favorite non-Christmas Christmas movie. Don't judge me. The 2011 prequel, which is also included in this DVD along with the original, doesn't quite hold its own against the original. It supplemented the practical effects from John Carpenter's original with modern digital effects, and the visuals do manage to surpass those found in the original. However, the original movie pretty much begins right where the prequel ends, so if you've seen Carpenter's film you don't have much doubt as to how the prequel ends. That alone eliminates a lot of the suspense. But I should also mention that fans of the original film are also likely to enjoy the 2011 prequel for what it is. As an aside, I'm always torn about which order to watch the two films in-- a first world problem.
