Works for my CRT + Titan X.
This is a DVI-I passive adapter. It allows my CRT monitor to connect to my TItan X graphics card, making it where I don't need an hdmi adapter that is buggier and causes monitor profile issues. If you do not have a CRT monitor and an old graphics card, you are probably looking for a DVI-D adapter.

Works now
Updated: September 11, 2020I had planned on taking the guts out of my small ITX case and drilling a hole for a VGA connector, but wanted to try something before I went down that road. I swapped out the VisionTek Silent 5450 Graphics card and swapped it with an Asus Silent 5450 Graphics card and tried this StarTech adapter again and what do you know, everything works great as I had hoped it would originally.Only thing left to figure out is the difference between two brands of 5450 Graphics cards which look similar and have the same connections but different behavior.Original Review: August 22, 2020By all accounts this product should have worked but it did not. When I used it the display was much larger than the 1920 x 1080 that it was set to. When I switched back to using the VGA output on the video card everything was as it should be. The only reason I cannot use the VGA output is that I have an ITX case with one half-height slot and the VGA connector would need to be in a 2nd slot connected by a cable. Down the road, I will gut the ITX case and make an opening for the VGA connector that comes off of the video card. For now I have to have a DVI cable to run this computer on a display. I needed VGA so I can switch it with the KVM. My tests were done w/o a KVM, so the KVM was not the issue. I wanted it to work but it would not work for me. Maybe it was defective?

Verify your pins
I thought this was going to be a great adapter for what I needed, but it it not. It has 4 pins around the slotted pin but my motherboard does not. So I guess what I really wanted was a 25 pin DVI male end. I did not know DVI came more than one way. This was just to connect an old VGA monitor to my motherboard that has no VGA connector to do initial BIOS/UEFI set up. I ended up buying a newer inexpensive monitor to use for these purposes. If it is common knowledge that there are different pin configurations for DVI then you all know this, but if not, then double check yours before buying.

COMPACT form factor and EXCELLENT performance
The StarTech DVI to VGA adapter does it's job well. I've used it with many client computers and my own. Never a problem. One think I like a lot is the low profile design. Many DVI to VGA adapters are much longer. This can put a lot of stress on the DVI connector on the video card. The longer the adapter the greater the leverage. With another longer adapter a client's video card got damaged when a cable was accidentally tugged at upward. Since then I've preferred these low profile connectors. So far no problems. So far no issues with the picture quality and I've used a number of them. These are well made and have been very reliable for me and my clients. I think the StarTech DVI to VGA adapter deserves 5 stars.

ALmost perfect
If there one thing that sucks about computers and monitors is the weird way that motherboard makers and monitor manufactures randomly use different port configurations. Never consistent, always different, never the same. I have a huge collection of different adapter cables. But the supreme pain in the ass is the DVI standard which is hardly a standard. Some have the little tab on them, some don't. The one has the flats pin which of course the cable does not rendering it useless. The mother board I have only has the DVI on it

Works well (except no automatic monitor detection)
I bought this to connect my old Samsung LCD monitor to a new Intel motherboard without a VGA connector. So far it's working perfectly, except that Ubuntu 12.04 could no longer detect my monitor model and therefore wouldn't list any screen resolutions above 1024x768 after installation. I finally fixed that by editing several entries in my xorg.conf file manually but that would be a bit too obscure for most users... I'm not certain whether the detection problem was due to the adaptor itself, the new board's graphics or the new Ubuntu version, but I'm guessing the problem is the adaptor being unable to pass the EDID information from the monitor, perhaps because a DVI-I connector has fewer analogue pins than a real VGA connector or just because it doesn't connect them all? I don't know whether a different adaptor would do better, but I'm very happy my old monitor is working until I get a new TV and can recommend this item if you can deal with a bit of extra setup.Be aware that there at least 3 types of DVI connectors. This kind of adaptor will ONLY work if your computer has a DVI-I or DVI-A connector and outputs an analogue signal component. If the graphics output is digital-only using a DVI-D connector then you're out of luck and will need an active DVI-VGA convertor (not adaptor) instead, which is quite a lot more expensive. I checked this by downloading my motherboard's manual from Intel before buying it.James.

Defective junk
One of the screws which fastens the adapter to the DVI-I port was too thick at the base and would not extend far enough through the hole to conjoin my device, whether I twist it or try pressing down on the screwI will never buy from this seller again

Works like it Should
I'm using this to convert my dvi connection on my new graphics card to vga (I know, it sounds stupid, I' doing it until I get an hdmi monitor). Works quite nice no problems at all with quality. Bought for around $1 so it is not a huge loss if it doesn't work out (as noted in the other reviews, but under different circumstances). If you are using this adapter in a similar manner to the way I am using it, then don't hesitate to get it. It works perfect in the circumstances I need it for and I am glad I bought it.
