with a husky torque wrench I torque it to the recommended 25lb ft
recently had recalls fixed, by dealership ,and while they had it I had them do a multi-point inspection and rotate tires. after I got it back and with oil change due, I got out my romper room socket set and driver, plenty for suv oil change, to discover the plug would not budge. I do not use a lift, normally, so the room for gaining leverage is a challenge. I use or2, jeep quadra lift, to get some room, but it remains a minor hassle for the Normal oil change. being the 5th oil change for the vehicle, I was baffled by the stuck plug. with a husky torque wrench I torque it to the recommended 25lb ft, MAX. recommended is 20-25lb ft. for those familiar with 25lb ft, that is not so tight. again, the limited room for leverage left me to move to the, gulp, vice grips. until this battle, I had not lost to a stuck plug with my hefty vice grips. I knew that the move to vice grips meant the risk of ruining the bolt face, but I was confident given my history. 3 hours and scrapes and bruising latter, I am a beaten down romper room mechanic. my guess is that the dealership mechanic has the habit of ensuring everything tight during the inspection and who knows what torque used to ensure that. LOTS!! so, panic stricken, I rush to the web, having mangled the bolt, and soon find IRWIN bolt extractors. I ordered the 9pc w/one day. I was in the garage giving it another go after letting supercreep get after it all night when the package arrived. I was depressed and far from confident this product could do what I could not with vice grips. I could get the grip on this plug. The first choice one has with the extractor set is which socket. I first tried the one closest to the bolt size and though it griped, it did not work. I went to the next smaller size and had a devil of a time hammering it in, again with limited space to generate force. NOTE: I removed the shield to get more space for this next step, but it was still not much for hammering. I finally got the extractor socket all the way down, can get frustrating so stick with it, and tried again with the torque wrench. I finally got a nasty snap and shocked by the sound immediately thought the head ripped off and a new oil pan in my future. Then I Noticed the socket was still on the plug and the plug was free. I am still kind of not believing that I could not get this bolt off with the vice scrips and that this worked beyond that. I wrote all that, sorry, in part to show that sometimes even those who know better end up with a mess. For those wondering, I used a 13mm 6pt socket, but I had a difficult time keeping it on the bolt with the force required in that limited space. It was a mistake to move so quickly to the trusty vice grips--I should have removed the shield first, but that is not why I pose this review. This product works. A picture shows the oil plug and you can see the groves where the extractor socket digs in. Thank you, IRWIN!

Outstanding Product
This extractor set worked like a charm. I had a nut on my Toro Timecutter mower that secured my deflector shield. I had to replace the shield, and the nut was on so tight that it quickly got stripped as I tried to remove it. I saw suggestions on YouTube to try the Irwin Extractor Set, so I ordered the set here on Amazon. I received the set late yesterday evening. This morning, after breakfast, I went out and put the set to use. I was amazed at how easily the nut came off. The 9/16 piece really bit into the stripped nut, and it came right off with very little effort. HIGHLY recommend.

Great product. Saved a ton of time on a difficult job.
I have a 13 year old car that developed a hole in the muffler. I decided to replace the entire exhaust system because it was badly rusted and was likely to have additional failure points in the near future. Needless to say, all of the bolts holding the parts together were solidly rusted together. A few seconds with a standard socket rounded off the bolts and nuts. On a hunch, I had purchased these extractors and had them ready. Soon, every bolt was removed and the exhaust pipes were on the ground. These things work like a dream! They have sharp flutes on the inside that are spiraled in reverse. When you start to twist the bolt or nut in reverse to remove it, you can clearly see these things clamping down and biting into the bolt. It literally shears into the metal as it turns. These things do not let go until the bolt is off! Sure, I soaked these things with PB blaster for hours before, but some of them were so bound on that I broke the bolt before the nut turned, so needless to say, I was putting a lot of force on them. These things work great and are worth every penny. I'm not sure what I would have done without them.

Works as described, but the case is flimsy and 9/13 packs are overpriced
My mower deck on my John Deere tractor needed adjustment. Unfortunately years of having wet grass covering it led the bolts/nuts to be a bit rusty and hard to grip with my standard ratchet set. I bought this set so I could get the bolt lose and make my adjustments. I had never used any kind of extractor bit before so I wasn't sure if it was a marketing gimmick, or if they really worked. In the past I had always just toughed it out and eventually gotten the bolt lose myself. However, this stubborn bolt on my tractor had me beat so I caved in and bought this set... Functionally, this set worked great. It extracted the bolt with little to no effort. I must have wasted an hour (including cut knuckles and a lot of cursing) trying to get the bolt to loosen before I bought this and with this extractor I completed the job in a manner of minutes. That being said, there are of few things that I wasn't a fan of: 1.) It's nice that it comes with a case, but the case is terrible. To begin with, the extractors don't in any way "lock into place" like your normal ratchet set will. They just kind of sit in there. This means they fall out very easily. Since I was using this outdoors (during the fall when leaves are everywhere), I almost lost one of the extractors. When my cheap $20 Chinese ratchet set can design a case where the items don't all fall out, I would have expected this to be able to as well. 2.) I really wanted the 9-piece set, but seriously, 5-piece for $20 and $73 for the 9-piece???? Four little pieces of metal are worth an additional $53???? That's ridiculous and seems like a rip off to me. Oh and one note from my own stupidity - these only REMOVE bolts, they can't be used to TIGHTEN bolts. It makes sense because of the reverse flute design, but without thinking I set my ratchet to tighten mode and the whole thing just slides over the bolt not grabbing at all causing me to hurt my hand. I don't think I can blame them for that, I was just an idiot, but I figure the other idiots out there like me might welcome the warning! :)

No need to write a long review. It does what it says and if it gets to grip the nut-bolt then it will open it. The key is getting the grip and for that you have to hammer it and use the right size. Dont worry since its very hard steel and hammering wont even scratch it. Buy the whole set. It will open whatever it can grab and the edges inside wont wear, its a very hard steel remember.
