A Solide, Well-Made Mix of Tactical and Everyday Function
Boom. It's a reasonably priced, well-made, Tactical pen. I did so much research on these and ultimately ordered this one. Since then I've ordered another for my brother. I've traveled internationally with this, no problem in and out of airports and security. Just don't wave it around in front of a TSA agent. Keep it in your bag. Not sure about the tactical capabilities--haven't needed to use it in any real life scenario. But I have no doubt it looks cool, writes well, and could do way more damage than a normal Bic pen. I would recommend purchasing a gel cartridge for it though. The cartridge it comes with is okay, but for a better writing experience buy a better refill. Only possible pain point for this--the weight. I wouldn't want to write an essay with this. Too heavy. But again, this is a tactical pen and isn't meant to write with all day. It's meant to sign your name and then stab someone (*only in situations where your life is being threatened and it is a last resort to survival). This gets my recommendation. A solid, well-made mix of tactical and ever day function.

Really solid...pen.
This thing feels nice and solid in the hand, and fits well in the pocket. I put a Fisher Space Pen Fine Point refill in there and it fits perfectly. Once screwed together everything feels tight and stays that way. The ink refill doesn't wiggle around either, solid. Nothing feels like it's going to loosen on you while using. I don't know if I would choose to write with it for extended periods of time, but tbh that's not totally the intended purpose anyway--so I don't mind. It isn't so heavy that it weighs down your pocket (even in b-ball shorts), but it still has a little heft to it which is nice. The clip is stylish and socially acceptable for a tactical item and doesn't scare your co-workers too much if you pull it out. Some people want to have a self defense tool but also not look like a tactical psychopath, and this pen achieves that balance nicely. In NYC there are some tight laws about carrying knives, so this is a great thing to have for peace of mind when you can't carry your machete around. Also if you lose it, or someone steals it, it's not that expensive and I wouldn't be upset if I had to replace so in the EDC it goes.

1st is Great but 2nd is Greater!
This is the first generation form of this pen. You can tell because of the smooth contours on the barrel. The only disadvantage to the first generation is that the cap does not screw onto the back when in use and tends to slip off easily. For that reason this pen gets four stars. The second generation is easier to hold - curvier - and the cap screws on to the back when in use - five stars. These pens use standard Parker refills. I always throw away the cartridge which comes with these and replace with Parker gel cartridges. Personal preference. The really cool thing about these is that even though they are made of aircraft aluminum and can be used in all the ways you would expect to be able to use a metal object of this particular size and with both blunt and very pointed (think pen point) edges - they go through airport security with no problem whatsoever. It's a pen. I have purchased tactical pens from several makers and Schrade is the only one which makes both a very nice pen to hold and use which happens to be in a tactical body, and a very effective tactical device which happens to include a very usable pen. You won't be unhappy with this version, but you will be happier with the second generation. I do not recommend the Schrade Survival Tactical pen. It feels funky in your hands, is not a pleasure to write with, and tries to do too much in a pocket format. These make great gifts for women and come in a variety of great colors. Do yourself a favor and search for Schrade 2nd Generation Tactical Pen on Amazon, but the first generation is good too.

A very sturdy, elegant writing instrument...among other things!
This pen was much lighter than I expected. It feels solid, I effortlessly punched a hole through the box amazon packaged it in, without a scratch. The ink it comes with is adequate, but I replaced it with a Parker 0.7mm Quink refill, and it writes phenomenally. The grooves, as others have noted, do feel a bit "sharp", towards the top, but it's honestly not an issue at all. The cap needs a slight push when attached to the back, but otherwise stays on well, and does not leave a scratch. The cap stays firmly intact when screwed on. All in all, I recommend this pen to anyone looking for a nice sturdy writing instrument. It feels great when writing, and with a nice Parker refill it's unbeatable price-wise to even the most professional of non "tactical" pens. It's very non aggressive looking, and if needed can be used in self defense. I just think it's a great pen!

It's a tool for defense first anything else second.
This is a well made tool. Emphasis on tool It is light weight, writes fine and is durable. I wanted a non lethal option as certain situations won't justify lethal options. I have had no problem with the clip or cap. It is coated but will fade over time and wear. It is obscure so it doesn't draw attention either. I bought this as it is dull enough to jab someone without puncturing but sharp enough to break a window. I did not like other options as the point on others with window breakers creates a stab risk. That means close contact with blood. And anything with a sharp enough point could be considered lethal. It also has a flat back that allows the thumb to go over and place to drive the pen. Many are pointed on both and you won't get the power behind or risk hurting yourself. Remember this is a tool to be used in defence. The pen itself is a bonus and secondary Don't play with the cap constantly and you won't risk it coming loose. There is no reason to use this as a daily use pen. It should be for emergency use or if you forgot a pen and needed one. You can train with it as well and highly recommend doing so.

For some reason, other tac pens out there all look like alien anal probe devices. This one is nice and simple. Works as a regular pen too. Every time I lose it (or get one taken away at the airport), I buy it again.

I love how simple this Tactical Pen is. It writes smoothly and feels very sturdy in hand. As for self-defense, the pen's simple design makes it a very effective focused-impact weapon. The flat pen cap allows you to rest your thumb for better grip during strikes, unlike other tactical pens. Its simple design also allows it to blend in as a non-offensive looking item. I have taught students using this pen without drawing attention to its secondary purpose of self-defense. I believe that effective weapons are meant to be felt, and not seen. This Tactical Pen achieves that through its unassuming design. Pros: Simple Design Writes Well Effective as a focused-impact weapon Does not look like a Tactical Pen Cons: None
