Shuttle [DVD] [2008]

"Everything is about money"
You have two young women coming back from vacation, and for one, her red bag doesn’t arrive. That delays them getting out of the airport, and during that time her friend meets up with two men, and they get persuaded to take a shuttle offered at half price. One of the women, Mel, knows sign language, and her friend Jules seems the lessor of the roles for being sharp. In with them in the shuttle is a totally spineless man, and when things go wrong, he is absolutely of no help. The driver, who is psychotic, manages to quickly sideline the other two men. The spineless man figures it is all about money, and wants to do everything possible to make sure he isn’t hurt. So he doesn’t help at all. At the halfway point of the movie, the plot really unfolds. That is probably when most of the plot twists start to happen, but the ending is the real story of what is happening. And Mel manages to finally do some very smart things, to little avail.Reading some of the other critics, this is a movie, and if every role did only smart things, there would be no movie. And yes, the driver takes more punishment than a man would be expected to endure and survive, but it also adds to the menace. One may think of the driver as being a ‘Jason” character without the mask. And the van remains driveable after all the punishment it takes. Are there plot holes and flaws? Certainly. Shuttle services at airports are licensed, so they should be on the up and up. But overall, a more interesting movie than I expected. 4 stars may be a bit generous, but 3 stars is a bit too stingy.

Not the worst movie
There are a lot of nonsensical things. Spoilers ahead. For example, if this is a real shuttle, how could they possibly get away with it? It's an airport, for crying out loud. Airports are probably the most secure place to be, and certainly have more than enough cameras. If it isn't a real shuttle, then they would have been arrested by airport police after the first time they tried to kidnap people. Also, although it would have been implausible for the police to find them, what's the point of even including the security camera scene if it amounts to absolutely nothing? There are more things, but this is enough to justify a score lower than 4 stars. On the plus side, the women actually fight back. It's not another movie where women are nonentities that do nothing but take off their clothes and shriek at the top of their lungs. The fighting back is fairly realistic, no instances of women magically killing huge men against whom the vast majority of men would be powerless. It's kind of BS that the male lead is somehow immortal and definitely immune to pain. The ending is incredibly negative. It used to be I was fine with that, but not anymore. It just seems pointless to watch people fighting for their lives for an hour and a half only for it all to be beyond worthless. Ordinarily, I would say two stars, but I'm hedging my bets that my dislike of the type of ending might be coloring my opinion a little.

I liked it
Why do people have to analyze everything? I was watching it not focusing on the details, but on the whole story. Yes it’s not the Titanic or Walking Dead, but it’s interesting enough. I used to be the same way, criticizing, all clever while sitting on the couch, “why didn’t they do this” or “how couldn’t she see that” “oh man, right behind you!” Sure we are all so brave eating popcorn on a cozy couch. I do believe that even when you get a gun from the bad guy you still may not shoot him, or not shoot dead, or he can still catch you if you run, or overpower you even when you are smacking him hard. Those bad guys have been doing it for years, these girls were just regular girls who came from vacation, same goes for the boys. If we add them being exhausted, hungry, sick, mentally drained, crazy scared, that’s a brutal cocktail. As I was watching I thought too oh well, maybe this or that could’ve been different, but I have no idea how I would’ve behaved! Maybe fighting, maybe sitting terrified quietly. No one knows until we are in their shoes. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard a story from my friends that sounded either stupid or unrealistic and my reaction was “no way!” And how many times I’ve heard “if I wasn’t there myself, I would’ve thought it was some bad movie, you couldn’t come up with it if you tried”. Crazy unbelievable things do happen. I actually was worried they were going to make this a fairytale story where two girls and two boys overpower two criminals and walk into the police station/sunset and later get married. Now that would’ve been a downer. If I wanted it to end with kisses I would’ve watched Cinderella. The way it ended, it’s actually pretty realistic, it happens every day, girls get shipped out even if they attempt to fight, and no one comes to their rescue. The whole story was pretty real and sad. I wasn’t focusing on the details.

The sex trade is real
It's overall a slow moving movie, but the larger idea behind is pretty good. We see a lot of movies with female empowerment that gives people a false sense of strength when it comes to that sort of thing - and this movie has an example of such a character (she's written too strong, in my opinion). But, the reality is, the good guys don't always win, and there is always someone out there who is stronger than you, and if they're evil enough, they can make you do anything they want. This movie is a good example of that, and it's a solemn reminder that this very issue is happening right now as I write this, and as you read it or watch this movie.

Not bad
I was so irritated by the how stupid they were they had many changes to kill him. I was more irritated by the blonde girl here weakness. All of them are just plain stupid. Every time he walked by in the bus they could of jump him or beat him with a crowbar. In a real world am sure people wouldn't be this stupid. But nope they just sat there looking stupid and cried like a baby. Over all it was a good movie to watch. I couldn't predict what happen next is what makes it part of a good movie.

A solid, yet underrated, dark horror mystery
I streamed this movie a few years ago, and instantly made a mental note of the title. It fits a horror niche that I really love; unique dark mysteries, set entirely at night, that are a little gruesome, unsettling and unpredictable.Anyway, I wanted to re-watch this recently but it wasn't being streamed by my current provider, so I picked up the DVD. Man, I'm glad I did. This movie is way better than I remember.Don't expect constant action, extreme gore, or an intricately sophisticated story. Instead Shuttle takes just a sprinkling of each ingredient, and produces a unique experience that rattles ever-forwards to it's own disturbing conclusion.Don't miss this one.

had potential, but just didnt quite deliver
I was very excited when this arrived in the post and was pleased to have a day of with my partner to watch it. However, I found myself growing more disappointed as the film went on, and when it reached its final conclusion I was positive I wouldn't bother to watch this film again.I think the premise of the film is very good, and I think if it had been handled differently it could have been a fantastic film, but in my opinion it went wrong in a few areas.Firstly, I didn't find many of the actors or the characters they played interesting at all, especially the two girls who are the main focus of attention. Whilst that may not always detract greatly from a film, I think in this one it does. I found that as the film went on I just didn't care what was going to happen to them. I think to really fuel a film like this you need to have someone to root for, or something to hope for, but I didn't care what the outcome was going to be.I would say it was filmed in a fairly standard way, none of the shots stood out to me as being bad, good, interesting or cleverly pulled off, but it is true that you don't need fancy filmmaking to tell a good story. So I don't think that the filming majorly affected this film, it just wasn't visually that interesting for me.The soundtrack was nothing special, nor was the sound design, which I think didn't help with creating the correct atmosphere for this film. Everything felt very standard.I think what really did it for me, was the fact that the film was struggling to hold my interest, and towards the very end, I felt it became a bit silly, which meant that the final scene didn't have the impact that it should have.I wouldn't say that people shouldn't give this film a go, others may enjoy it far more than I did, but in my opinion it is the kind of film that promises more than it delivers, and leaves you feeling a bit bored and empty afterwards.

Confronting
Certainly not a film you want to watch if you need your spirits lifted, 'Shuttle' puts on display the worst of human behaviour. Although you know from the start you are watching a horror film, the premise is innocent enough in that a couple of girls simply decide to take an airport shuttle bus from the airport into the city. This is really just a normal, everyday thing that many people would do without a further thought. But in this case there is something very sinister in store for them. You'll need to find out more for yourself by watching the film. It's fairly long at 102 minutes, but well paced and it kept me interested all the way along, although I had worked out what was really happening fairly early on as the filmmakers do give you lots of hints. In regard to the disk, there are two soundtracks available - a Dolby 2.0 as well as a Dolby 5.1. I listened to the 5.1 track but this really isn't a film that uses the sound overly much.

One of the best horrors I've seen in a while.
I loved this film, everyone kept saying how great it was (I was a little dubious about the `secret' ending) and I'm fed up of wasting time watching bad films so I thought I would give it a go. It delivered! I loved the twist (figured it out but it was still fun to watch it play out). I loved the signing too - great seeing a little bit of disability in a mainstream film. And the end was chilling, there's a lot of money in it, so it could actually happen! Obviously there was unnecessary gore and it could have been shorter but it's a horror film, not real life, so I enjoyed it all for what it was. I liked the characters, yes they were all a stereotype but again, it's a horror film, there's no need to waste time giving characters massive amounts of depth and as it was I liked them all enough to not want them to die which is all you need an audience to do.I'm a little confused at the low rated reviews, I thought this was a brilliant film and I have watched a lot of horrors, the points about the characters not trying to escape, well they are trying to stay alive and do take opportunities which turn out badly and get punished for other discrepancies so a point is made that they know the price they pay for messing up is death so they are trying to pick their moments.Regarding the supermarket, she exits, thinks she took too long and her friend has been murdered as threatened, so yes she is a little upset and reacts accordingly.Overall I wonder how differently I would behave if it was me.

"A Nightmare Ride"
What a gem of a movie,no big names, alow budget, but totally absorbing from the off.Basically 2 girls get picked up outside an airport returning from holiday,by a mini bus taxi. So it begins the nightmare ride of terror, this is no straightforward ride home,The sinister driver starts doing some detours, and without going into to much detail its a question of can the girls escape from whats in store for them.A very realistic story that could be happening out there,a dramatic ending, which left me thinking about the film days afterward.good stuff at a real low price to buy.The acting was exellent and the twists and turns make this a real nailbiter.
