Exquisite trashy melodrama. For everyone who's ever been a confused teenager in love!
I’ve never been a fan of the term “guilty pleasure.” It’s entertainment. So, if it entertains you, why should you feel guilty? However, something like “Domestic Girlfriend” is so unapologetic with melodramatics that I feel like we should all apologize on its behalf.Right off the bat, the set-up sounds like some kind of implausible trash soap opera, setting up a love triangle with tortured teenage aspiring writer Natsuo and his two new step-sisters-- Hina & Rui. As an adult in my 30s, my instinct is to brush this off as insignificant teen angst. But where this series really sucker punches me in the heart is that I can still remember being that kind of soulful teenager, crippled by hormones and an unshakable conviction that I’m more mature than anyone gives me credit for. Natsuo is the kind of precocious, undiscovered genius that we all imagined that we were in high school. (He reminds me a bit of Max Fischer from “Rushmore,” but with more suave.)Flanking Natsuo on either side of this tragic triangle are Rui & Hina, two sisters who are each flawed in opposite ways. Rui is cold, socially awkward, and often puts up hostile barriers between herself and everyone around her. Hina is warm, lacking in boundaries, and overly affectionate with her students at the high school where she teaches. Of course, since this is an anime, the main question throughout the internet is: Who is “best girl”? This show gives a very complicated answer to that.Rui is certainly the more interesting and believable character. She’s consumed by just as many confusing teenage hormones as Natsuo is and she acts on them impulsively, not really thinking about what kind of awkward emotional situation she’s putting herself and everyone around her. Every time she kisses Natsuo or joins him in the bath, it feels like a massive mistake but it’s one that they’re both too young to truly understand. Their relationship makes perfect sense in the moment, even if the mature thing for both of them would be to walk away.Hina is the more outwardly charming character. She’s sweet and warm and vulnerable. It’s hard to imagine a man who wouldn’t fall in love with her. Of course Natsuo would be reduced to a blob of lovelorn putty in her hands! My own youth was smattered with charming, willowy older women that I would do anything for. But what makes Hina a less believable character is that she reciprocates Natsuo’s feelings so genuinely. While I can totally believe his crush on her, I really don’t see what a grown woman like that sees in a high schooler 8 years younger than her. (If I’m doing the math right, I think that Hina is about 24 while Natsuo & Rui are both about 16.) If you’re reading this and you do happen to be a lovelorn 16-year-old like I once was, I hate to shatter your fantasy, but that 24-year-old that you’re crushing on won’t see you as anything more than a naive child. NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN. Granted, there have been instances of female teachers becoming romantically involved with their students in real life, but those are emotionally damaged women who should be avoided. “Domestic Girlfriend” prefers to stick with portraying Hina as the epitome of romantic fantasy rather than doing any deep dive into what trauma made her so needy that she needs the attention of high schoolers.Given that Natsuo does eventually develop an intense, mutual relationship with Hina, it would be easy to dismiss this series as male wish-fulfillment. Except for the fact that the original manga was written by a woman, so she’s either got her own hang-ups or else she really knows what pushes the buttons of the male brain. But, either way, the angst of seeing these characters gripped into a vortex of love & longing that they can’t control is one of the most exquisite dramas that I’ve ever seen. My 37-year-old self is drained from marathoning the series in a week. If I’d actually been a teenager when I saw this, the ending would have left me completely wrecked, a blubbering mass on the floor, screaming as if Hina herself were literally carving out my heart with a chainsaw. Even now, I feel echoes of all the times that my heart was shattered by a woman that I thought I couldn’t live without. And I absolutely can’t wait for Season 2! Every twist and turn is like an exquisite cigarette burn on my soul and you will be amazed at how many lifetimes of drama are compacted into each 24 minute episode!

Great story
One of my favorites. It’s a bit of a taboo relationship kind of story, but it has a good mix of romantic comedy and drama. I would very highly suggest reading the manga if you want to go further into the story and really want to go on an emotional roller coaster.

One of the year's best romantic dramas!
First off, this is absolutely not for children! The sex scenes are the closest you can get without it being full-on ero-anime (hentai). This is a story about love, angst, rejection, and consequences. It's a bit of a love triangle with a fourth wheel thrown in for good measure. Sometimes, pursuing what you want by any means necessary is not always the best option.Who will it hurt in the process? What will you gain? All these questions are answered in Domestic Girlfriend. Please note: This is NOT the TV aired version but the fully uncensored release. So watch out, don't even watch it with kids or your parents around! But I absolutely loved it! 9 out of 10. Why only 9? Because the bar/restaurant owner was kind of 'off-putting'.If you're gay I understand but...why the hell are you wearing a mini-skirt??

Its good.
Its a decent anime. I seen this first one crunchyroll and I liked it. The opening is awesome and added it to my playlist, I bought this cause I wanted to start an anime collection, this was the first to my collection. I watched it and was surprised how they actually show extra scenes (by that I mean that they shortend the one I saw on crunchyroll) they have some scenes that are NOT for kids. Tho the story is cringy at times I believe it is good, I mean I liked it enough to but it 🤣🤣
