Just ordered these solar cells.  What is a good backing material since they are being described as very thin and fragile.

Hi; I'm in the process of building my first solar panel, and  "YES" the cells are extremely fragile. After breaking and cracking several cells, I decided to purchased a few rolls of self-adhesive shelving vinyl at Wal Mart and found that sticking the adhesive shelving vinyl on back side of each cell before I began to solder the tabbing wire to the cells was a Big Help. example: If you happen to crack a cell, the fractured cell would still be in tact and viable. Try this, place the adhesive vinyl face down on a smooth surface that you will eventually throw away because you will be using a utility knife, a straight edge ( a T-square would be best ) and a sharp pair of scissors to cut the vinyl. Start by drawing a straight line across the ( 20 inch ) width of the vinyl, then draw four  4-7/8" squares on the line. Be sure to also draw two lines 1/4" apart to remove that would cover the area where you will solder the tabbing wire to each side of the cell. Draw as many 4-7/8" squares that it will take to cover the number of cells you will be using for one panel. Save all your vinyl scrap pieces for later, they will come in handy to keep the cells secured when you start to solder the cells to form strings.The panels that I'm assembling consist of 4 strings of 9 cells. After everything has been assembled, I'm not sure how the heat will effect the vinyl backing.

How heavy are the 5x5 solar cells?  Per cells, per panels in lbs.

Hello Alex,This is Chris from HEAL Energy Technology. We sell these products, and to answer your question, each individual cell is about .5 ounces. They are very light, very thin, and very fragile individually. I hope this helps!

how do you connect wires to it?

First off, be very, very, very, careful when you handle the cells. They are FRAGILE. Depending on the size of your PV cells and the spacing between them, you will need to cut your tabbing wire approximately twice the length of one cell. I used 5" X 5" cells and spaced 1/4" apart, so I cut my tabbing wires 10" long. Assuming you purchased some tabbing wire, bus wire, a flux pen online. Start by applying flux to the designated spaces on the face of a cell, which you will find to be the Negative side of the cell.  The Back side to be the Positive side of the cell.  DO NOT apply solder to your soldering iron. The Tabbing Wire has been pre- coated with solder.  With your soldering iron heated to the max, place tabbing wire in position then apply the soldering iron with very little pressure, when you hear the flux sizzling move the soldering iron slowly across the tabbing wire until the space has been covered, let cool and check to see that the tabbing wire has taken hold. If so, continue until you have soldered both tabbing wires in the same direction to the cell. When you have the cells needed to complete a string of cells, turn a cell face down and place another cell face down next to the first cell, placing the tabbing wires of the second cell on the top side of the first cell then put a spacer between the two cells, line the cells against a straight edge, apply flux, check alignment then solder the tabbing wires of the second cell to the first cell. Do the same with the 3rd, 4th, 5th cells and so on until you have completed your string of cells. The manner in which you have soldered these cells together you have created a string of cells in Series. Which means the voltage of each cell is added together for a total sum of that string.
