Ok to learn windows programming.
Tis a good book, one of the better ones out there. I like the book because it does not go into console programming, which most do. The author goes into window programming. Give a good review and expects the reader to have a little understanding of C++. Game programming learning is great. I recommend for wanting to learn to get this book. You will not waste money.

I do not recommend this author
I do not recommend this author. He typicallys starts out very strong. However, his follow through when it comes to writing books leaves much to desire. I purchased this book to assist a classmate with an assignment. As per his usually he frequently leaves a lot of along with broken code.

5/5 - Beginner Friendly
Let me start off by saying I also own the 3rd edition of this book. I love the writing style the Author uses, and the lessons are manageable chunks that make it easier to study and then later apply what you've learned. I've been through countless C++ Game Programming books and none of them give me a sense of accomplishment like this book. All in All you'll love the pace of the book, you'll learn the ins and outs of basic game programming, and walk away with a playable game that you're able to fully modify. All of the code in the book compiles and works, the author also runs a website which is easy enough to google search for, Amazon seems to hate links now so I'm not able to post it here.

Obsolete
I didn't buy this book, I read table of contents and went to author's blog. What I found:1. The first edition of this book was first published 10 years ago. Looks like this edition is an updated version of the original text.2. The book is devoted mostly to the game programming with sprites... not 3D.3. The author uses Win32 for examples and has nothing on Windows 8 Metro/Modern UI. This is not that important, but...4. The author describes use of the obsolete DirectSound API, while the current is XAudio2.Decision (for myself): Avoid.IMHO at that moment the best book is Frank Luna's "Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 11", though it is also obsolete... actually there is no book that catches up with DirectX updates, bat Luna's book has good material on 3D math to be at least 80% useful.

It's a pitty!
The whole book is based on DirectX 9! If you need information about the latest DirectX version (11) buy another one.
