Barrel-Mounted Ballistics Chronographs

For rifle use, this is the most reliable way to measure true MUZZLE velocity. I have had the privilege of running the MagnetoSpeed side-by-side with a Caldwell Pro chronograph, a Garmin Xero, and LabRadar all at the same time with some 20 odd rifles of varying performance and velocities. After an extensive session, with over 500 rounds fired, and the data collected and analyzed, the MagnetoSpeed was the clear winner. To clarify, the usual chrony has weather limitations and has the disadvantage of needing to move forward of a firing line to set-up (which can be a pain on public ranges). The Xero comes in second best, but is the most convenient by far. The real reason why the MagnetoSpeed reigns supreme, is that there was never ANY anomalies in the data. The LabRadar had too many anomalies for my liking, and is overly dependent on set-up parameters (including close by obstacles, walls, baffles etc.). Overall, it is hard to beat the Xero for convenience and accuracy combined, but when data accuracy is all that really matters - Magnetospeed is King! No extrapolated results, just true muzzle velocity.

This is a great chrono. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? A qualified yes. This is work every penny if you: 1. Reload and use a chrono a lot. 2. Want the most accurate reading available on the retail market for less than thousands of dollars. If both apply then it is even a better deal. It is truly nice to be able to set up, adjust and take down a chrono without have to cease fire at a range. Heck, some ranges don't even let you use a traditional chrono. These are far more accurate and consistent that the light based chronos. You can use it in any light condition and even indoors. It is easy to use with a good menu system and simple controls, nothing to "techy". Data is saved in a standard CSV file that can be opened with any spreadsheet program like Excel. Had mine at the range yesterday and had a lot of interest, I may have even sold 1 or 2. Maybe MagnetoSpeed should give out referrals:) I also recommend getting the accessories for tapered barrels and the adapter for rail system mounts. This will help make sure almost any firearm you have will work. A final note is that MagnetoSpeed has great service and support. My original purchase had issues reading the shots. One call and they shipped a new bayo and all is well.
