I don't usually write reviews but I will for this wonderful piece of kit. This dock uses a VIA Labs VL716 (USB to SATA bridge) controller, which is a USB-IF certified chipset. The polycarbonate housing is crystal clear, has vented ribs in a ring around the bottom of the housing and should be more durable than the plastic housings of other docks. The padded feet on the bottom of the dock are reasonably wide and do a good job keeping the dock stable. 3.5" drives fit nicely inside. There is a blue LED that is steady lit when the dock is powered on and blinks when there is disk I/O. Due to the clear housing, light from the LED is visible from 360° around the dock. The LED is bright but not ridiculously so. The power button is a "soft switch" like your laptop power button, not a hard toggle switch found in cheaper docks. The power adapter output is rated at 12V/2A. The dock comes with two USB cables (Type-C to Type-C, and Type-C to Type-A). I cannot comment to those included cables, since I only use USB-IF certified cables from a specific vendor. This dock works perfectly with 4Kn drives such as Seagate Exos ST8000NM002A. When creating filesystems, Linux has no problem seeing the drive is 4Kn and uses 4096 byte sector size just like it should. The Amazon description says this dock supports 16TB drives but I have only been able to test up to the 8TB drives I have. I am trying to think of anything negative or lacking about this dock, but I honestly can't. I have been using two of them for almost a week in nearly 24/7 operation for data archival and have had zero issues.

While I like the product, I find the sleep mode problematic. If your hard drive remains idle for 10 minutes, sleep mode activates to maintain the health of your drives. However, this causes your hard drives to disappear from the "My Computer" folder, forcing you to turn off the device. Occasionally, the drives reappear after 60 seconds, but not consistently. From my understanding, you can't turn off this feature. The workaround is to find software that checks your hard drive every minute or so. Currently, I use this for my Plex server. It works great if you are watching movies and TV shows all day. My settings is raid 1 on my TV Shows and Raid 1 for my movies. Update: You could ask Orico to give you the software to turn off sleep mode. It will rewrite the firmware to disable it! Now it's 5 stars.
