"High-octane action thriller..." Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times Snake is back! Kurt Russell rejoins filmmakers John Carpenter and Debra Hill to do to Los Angeles what they did to the Big Apple in Escape From New York with even more futuristic thrills and big action! Into the 9.6-quaked Los Angeles of 2013 comes Snake Plissken (Russell). His job: wade through L.A.'s ruined landmarks to retrieve a doomsday device. Don't miss the excitement as Snake surfs Wilshire Blvd., shoots hoops at the Coliseum, dive bombs the Happy Kingdom theme park, and mixes it up with a wild assortment of friends and foes including Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, Bruce Campbell, Peter Fonda, George Corraface, Cliff Robertson and Pam Grier. Escape From L.A. is a "go-for-broke action extravaganza" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times)! Review: Perfect - There are a few versions of this story and this is up there with the magical 1947 film. Richard Attenborough {Kris Kringle,} and Mara Wilson {Susan,} are perfectly cast. Christmas wrapped up 1990s style but with same message of faith and believing in something good. Review: Good film - Good to see on Christmas

Part sequel, part remake, part parody and a whole lot of fun.
Snake is back! Escape From L.A. is the sequel to the cult classic Escape From New York. As I have said in the heading for this review it is partly a remake and partly a parody which makes the film camp and fun which some viewers may not of wanted from this film as Escape From New York was more dark but that's not to say that the first film didn't have humour or cartoony characters its just L.A. ramps everything up like most sequels do. The plot is pretty much a retread and Kurt Russell is great as Snake again, the screenplay is full of wit, there are plenty of colourful characters and some great scenes, my personal favourite being the Basketball game. Some of the special effects are a little clunky like most of the CGI from the mid nineties but that also lends a bit of charm to the film so I recommend catching up with Snake Plissken in this tongue in cheek adventure.

Snake is back, baby
Summer 1996 really was NOT the right moment to bring back Snake Plissken. America was caught up in Olympic fever and was riding the mad, patriotic wave extremely high with the release of ID4 and other huge action hits such as Twister and Mission: Impossible. A sobering reality check of the grim, forthcoming future instigated by a hypocritical government with a cynical, outcast anti-hero was NOT what anyone wanted. I remember sitting in the foyer at the now-demolished ABC cinema in Edinburgh on September 21st 1996 (we had to wait a month after the US release) waiting for the screen to open. A couple of young women exited the previous screening loudly proclaiming "That was the worst film I have ever seen." Bad Boys II had not been made at this point. I don't think that Escape from LA is a bad film, but it is a failure on many levels, not the least of which are the shoddy CGI effects which look like they came from a mid-90s CD-ROM. Since the massive spike in crime in America in the late 1980s, and the subsequent transformation of Manhattan into a prison colony, the United States Police Force and their religious lunatic Head of State has slowly but surely erased all liberty from the American people, denying them the rights to swear, have sex, eat red meat, smoke, or drink alcohol (all for their own safety of course), while at the same time expanding their empire by pushing into foreign territories. Any of this sound familiar? In 2000 a massive earthquake strikes Los Angeles and the city is transformed into an island, declared no longer part of the United States, and becomes the new, west-coast prison colony. Whether you're a murderer or an atheist, you lose your citizenship and are dumped on LA Island. Unless you opt for a quick electrocution before deportation. It had been 15 years since his famous escape from the Big Apple, but Snake had remained a strong cult character and had a big following. This time he's dropped into the Big Orange in 2013 with the promise that if he retrieves a doomsday device he will be able to walk free. "Freedom? In America?" asks Snake. "It died a long time ago." This was 1996! Carpenter and Russell could clearly see the dark path their country was heading down. If only they conveyed their ideas and satire in a more cohesive, intelligent fashion. Escape from LA has big ideas, huge ideas even, but a cheap 101 minutes is not the best way to fully explore and develop such satire. As with his previous movies, Carpenter's vision is epic, but the execution is implied. This may work with horror movies like Prince of Darkness but it fails here. It really, really fails. When Snake shuts down the Earth at the end of the movie do we see the effects of such devastation on the planet? Do we see highways and cities go dark, do we watch mankind revert to the stone age as the juice he has relied on to keep him warm runs dry? No. Instead we see a couple of lights go out in a drab police compound. Wow! That's so not freakin' exciting, Carpenter! So much potential, so much disappointment. At the very, very least it works as a trashy action movie but it should have been so much more. The 2.40:1 1080p picture doesn't exhibit the anamorphic Panavision photography so good. The Dolby TrueHD sound fares better. There are no extras other than a trailer.

.... for those who didn't, well... you may not enjoy this B-grade action flick. However these type of B-grade action movies could be glorious back in their time. Kurt Russel was just below Schwarzenegger and Wesley Snipes as favorite actors of mine as a kid in the late 80s early 90s so I wanted to have this in my collection even though I owned it on dvd. (This character he plays was actually huge inspiration for Hideo Kojima for his classic series Metal Gear!) If you grew up in this age of action movies and never witnessed it, give it a go, it might just take you back to an age where movies were meant to fun!

Bref LOS ANGELES 2013 ( Escape from L.a.

Even after prior assurance from Customer support that the BD would be region 'B', it was region 'A'. So make sure you have a region 'A' or uncoded player if you order this item... (ASIN : B083MW5BFY) The film in itself - seen it maaany years ago (liked it back then), and was looking forward to seeing it again... but that will have to wait I guess. So, no review of the actual film...
