McQ (BD)]]> Review: Good film and streams great - Another great film starring The Duke! Streams great and good picture quality even considering the original is from the 70's. Review: 'McQ' WILL DO IT HIS WAY' - After a spate of overnight cop-killings on the streets of 'Seattle' head-of-homicide' 'Kosterman' (Eddie Albert) orders a dragnet believing the killings are the work of street militants . 'McQ' (John Wayne) who's close friend and colleague 'Boyle' was among the victims he wants to lead the investigation believing the reason behind the killings more likely to be drug-related. However 'Kosterman' tells 'McQ' he's too close to one of the victims to become involved, after a threat to have 'McQ' desk-bound during the investigation the veteran cop turns in his badge. 'McQ' is old-school and has his own way of doing things, under the cover of being a licensed private investigator he'll dig out the truth himself. 'McQ' is convinced a high-profile drug lord is behind the killings, however as he digs deeper the truth will be far less comfortable for him. 'John Wayne' trades in his horse for a high-powered fast-car in this cop-thriller which has some good car-chase and fire-fight sequences to enjoy along the way. Though probably not the best cop-movie of the early 70's it is enjoyable, and an essential addition to ones collection if a fan of 'The Duke' 'John Wayne' of course is best remembered for his many Westerns he did of course star in many other films such as this. Good Blu-ray upgrade The Film is ''Multi-Region' Features - Featurette - 'McQ' John Wayne in Action Theatrical Trailer.

Seattle city of the 70s!
I'll admit, the Duke is a bit long in the tooth for this action movie; however, it's enjoyable for me. I lived in Seattle during the time of this movie. Seeing the downtown city as it was, the grittier parts, the old, now gone, Aurora Avenue overpass just brings back good memories. The storyline was interesting and the action was entertaining. It isn't for everyone but it took me back in time to a city I love.

The Duke rides again
Strap on your irons, saddle up and get ready for a ride on the wild side.Only your means of transportation isn't horse flesh but a hot muscle car complete with sound affects. A cop is shot down by a lone gunman. Then another. The lone gunman takes a coffee break(killing must be hard work). Then the gunman is taken out. Bad move! The now deceased gunman happens to be a cop as well.Only this dirty cop has a friend. You guessed it,big John. That is McQ,a cop who sets his own rules. His main quest is to find the killers of his friend and bring them down. His unorthodox police methods lands him in contention with his boss Eddie Albert. The Duke resigns gives up his second of three pistolas and continues his investigation as a licensed private dick. The fun continues until the final climax. There's a supprise twist at the end but I'm not telling what it is.Look for the cool machine pistol with a looooong silencer. As a dude who hung out in the sixties, with a muscle of my own,I loved the sound affects of the big horse engine and tranmission winding up the rpms in the chase scenes, but when big John ends up in a granny car (His muscle car kind of got squished) you still hear the same sound affects.Ooops! Great movie! Five stars for me.

"Wayne 0n Wheels !!!"
I first saw "McQ" in the theater soon after it was first released in early 1974. I was 18 at the time, well I'm 64 now and I got it on DVD and I appreciate it even more. John Wayne plays a cop for the first time. Lon McHugh,(that's how it's really spelled,) a Seattle Detective Lt. after drug dealers and mobsters. The head mobster named Santiago was played by Al Lettieri who played a rotten no good gangster in "The Godfather". Directed by John Sturges ,("The Magnificent Seven" from 1960 and "The Great Escape" from 1963,) does a fine job here. Features a good supporting cast, fine cinematography by Harry Stradling,Jr. who filmed the great western "Little Big Man" from 1970 and was nominated for the "Oscar" for "The Way We Were" from 1973 and score by the great Elmer Bernstein. "The Duke" drives a cool Pontiac Trams Am called "The Green Hornet", very rare now , worth 100 thousand dollars or more today. It is pretty well known now that John Wayne was first offered the role of "Dirty Harry". The creators of "Dirty Harry" Rita and Harry Julian Fink ,a husband and wife writing team ,who wrote the Western "Big Jake" for him in 1971 offered the role to him. He said in an interview in 1973 that he turned the role down "because he couldn't speak the language. People don't want that big a change in John Wayne." Steve McQueen also turned it down because he didn't want to do another cop movie after "Bullitt" from 1968. Paul Newman also turned it down and suggested it to Clint Eastwood who didn't regret it. The DVD features an entertaining 10 minute documentary from 1973 and the trailer. The taglines for the movie posters read, "McQ is a busted cop. His gun is unlicensed. His methods are unlawful. His story is incredible." and "Wayne On Wheels !!!"

Different, but enjoyable!
This is a very different role for the Duke, but he pulled it off very well in my opinion. But I'm a sucker for murder movies, and with John Wayne to top it off, you can't lose! Sound and picture quality was good, acting was pretty good, and the story was great to me. I had my dad beat figuring out the bad guys at the end. I told him who I thought it was, and he said," no it can't be", but I was right!! Would recommend to anyone.

The blu ray is a US import but it is region free so plays fine on a UK player. Last time I saw this movie was more than 35 years ago so I wanted to catch up with it again. The movie stands up very well, directed by Hollywood heavyweight John Sturges ( Bad Day at Black Rock, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) it has stood the test of time thanks to realistic dialogue, good story and well rounded characters, it is a solid 1970s police action thriller. McQ has been compared to the Dirty Harry films but I would say by comparison the Dirty Harry films were glossy and more fantasy orientated with overblown characters, McQ has more in common with gritty 1970s thrillers like "The French Connection" or "The Seven Ups", so McQ is more realistic and grounded, the character played by John Wayne is a maverick cop with plenty laconic wisecracks but he is no superman and it takes him a while to realise and accept that his murdered best buddy was in fact a corrupt cop who was involved in stealing drugs that had been seized from criminals. There are a few twists and turns in the story and some surprising revelations, the dialogue is important so worth paying attention! Visually the film is good to look at, the director has found the grimiest darkest parts of Seattle to film in so the film has a dark ominous atmosphere which suits the story, much of it seems to be shot at twilight or at night and appears gritty with a very filmic look which I like very much and the blu ray disc has maintained that quality of the original 1970s filmic elements. Also,... a note about that Ingram Machine gun featured on the artwork of the blu ray cover, this is 1974 so perhaps one of the first times that kind of weapon has been seen in a movie, McQ uses it to devastating effect during a spectacular car chase along a beach, without giving too much away the movie is actually worth watching for the climatic gun battle alone, it is very well done and proves that John wayne as McQ was able to fire a small Ingram machine resting on his forearm as he drives his car, long before James Bond ever did in the opening chase scene in Quantam Of Solace. Anyway glad I finally caught up with McQ again after all these years, I was not disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed it.

pour une fois John Wayne n'est pas un cow boy mais un flic vieillissant confronté à la violence et à des policiers ripoux. même s'il ne peut cacher son âge, le duke nous prouve qu'il peut se reconvertir dans d'autres rôles avec talent.

I've just watched this film and thoroughly enjoyed it. To be honest I expected something along the lines of Brannigan. Don't get me wrong, Brannigan is a decent movie but it's a vehicle for the big man and you remove him and you've got a 2nd rate film. However, McQ is actually a rather good cop film in its own right. The big man is in fine fettle. I can't recommend MqQ highly enough. Its a brilliant cop movie. Don't miss.
