Three CD set. Long-established as a hugely popular radio format, the Classic Rock sound was established in the Seventies, when numerous British bands from a pop or blues-based background pioneered a muscular, riff-based sound that dominated American FM airwaves and led the most successful practitioners to fame, fortune and all manner of related excess. But although there are innumerable radio stations now devoted to the baby boomer sounds of Classic Rock, their innately conservative, playlist-based nature means that the same heavyweight tunes are endlessly recycled: the casual listener could be forgiven for thinking that the careers of major bands like Thin Lizzy and The Who didn't extend beyond 'Whiskey In The Jar', 'The Boys Are Back In Town' and 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. So, allow the Grapefruit label to break down the walls of stultifying retroactive conservatism with an alternative look at the Classic Rock genre. Riding The Rock Machine features many of the era's headline names (Lizzy and The 'Oo, but also The Moody Blues, Free, Status Quo, Jethro Tull, Procol Harum, ELP, ELO, Uriah Heep etc) in slightly less familiar settings as well as some Classic Rock-friendly performances from acts who walked the walk and talked the talk but never quite received the same level of acclaim as the brand leaders. Housed in a no-expense-spared clamshell box with a lavishly annotated and illustrated 40-page booklet, Riding The Rock Machine features four hours of vintage sounds from British rock's golden age as Grapefruit turns it up to eleven and goes where other labels fear to tread in search of the perfect riff. As our opening track proclaims, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll!

GREAT CLAM SHELL BOX BY GRAPEFRUIT OF SOME INTERESTING 70S ROCK!!!
if you where a fan or hard rock, glam rock prog rock or basic classic rock back in the 70s you will really like this set!!!! we have many of the best artists across 3 cds here and the tracks chosen by grapefruit for this set are quite interesting , the only track that was a let down was track 16 disc#1 by the SAHB they had a lot better tracks in there heyday then boston tea party but that is small stuff, the rest of disc #1, #2 & #3 are fantastic with a host of some of the best the 70s had to offer, i love the way the set starts off on disc #1 with LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL by RAINBOW as those first 3 rainbow albums w/ dio are timeless classics. then we move on to more killer cuts from URIAH HEEP, FOGHAT, BLACKFOOT SUE, THE WHO (w/ the great entwistle penned SUCCESS STORY from who by numbers in 75), TRAPEZE,FANCY & THE SWEET. disc #2 offers up greats from NAZARETH, FREE,MAN, HAWKWIND,STATUS QUO, MAGNUM, DUFFY,ROCOCO,STRAY, & ELP, disc #3 offers more 70s killers from BE BOP DELUXE, ATOMIC ROOSTER, FAMILY, HELLO, THIN LIZZY,HARD STUFF, & ARGENT, as well as im aware some say the 60s was the best decade for rock n roll & until punk the 70s was boring i always begged to differ on that becouse LOOK AT ALL THE CLASSICS HERE????? there was nothing wrong with the 70s and 80s either in my opinion, things started to go down hill around 1991, 92 but that is old news, this is a great remastered 3 cd box set with fantastic top notch packaging in a nice hard clam shell box!!!!!! any rock fan of the 70s that still loves the cd format collections like this WILL LOVE THIS!!!!! this is a high quality release...... p.s i love the HELLO TRACK on here from 1974 BACK IN THE NEW YORK GROOVE as it will educate KISS freaks that ACE FREHELEY copied NEW YORK GROOVE from HELLO IN 1978 wich many fans do not belive or do not want to belive>>

Disappointing!!!
I was expecting some certified rock classics and many hidden ROCK treasures. Instead, this set has a handful of classics which I already have on multiple collections and a bunch of really marginal pop-type hits that do nothing for me. In fact, most of them I found annoying; there's no mystery why these tunes never went anywhere. I LOVE BRITISH ROCK, and so I had high hopes for this set, but instead this is money wasted. I have been buying many of the 3-CD Grapefruit/Cherry Red/ etc. British sets, and this is by far the worst of them.

Compilation rappresentativa
Ma invero piuttosto noiosa. A parte qualche chicca, le sonorità dei brani sono tutte uguali.

God Gave Rock 'n 'Roll To You
Marvellous stuff! A fabulous, heads down, hard rockin' compilation of some of the best rock ever laid down. And, delightfully, thrillingly, fantastically, it avoids all those tracks rotated to death on rock radio stations. Nothing wrong with those big hits at all. But who needs to hear only those, when there is so much really great stuff out there. Especially when we are suddenly, unexpectedly, reminded about something we once loved back in the day, but which was not a big hit single or a well known album track. So across the marvellous fifty-nine - yes FIFTY NINE - tracks here, are many many half-forgotten gems by Alex Harvey, Spencer Davis, Foreigner, Curved Air, Mott, Foghat and Medicine Head. But don't just confine yourself to the tracks that I particularly love. Contemplate at length the full track listing right here, and gaze in adoration at some of the best music you will ever hear. That will tell you, far better than any words of mine, how much you will love what lies herein. Then buy it, and play it, over and over and over. Savour the wonderful recording quality, the fantastic booklet, and the marvellous sequencing of tracks. And, above all good people, play it LOUD!DISC ONE:1. LONG LIVE ROCK’N’ROLL – Rainbow2. Classic indeed.
This fine collection will bring back many happy memories for those of us who were teenagers at the time. We planned our lives around Alan Freeman's Saturday Rock Show on Radio 1, Nicky Horne's evening sessions on Capital Radio and worshiped at the altar of The Old Grey Whistle Test on BBC2. Many of us will already have some of the tracks on the listed artists original albums but it is great to have them all in one place. It is a great A-Z of the period and sums up British rock music nigh on perfectly. All the big names are here, too many to list, along with the one album wonders and undiscovered musical gems. Very good track by track notes which often reveal that several British bands who enjoyed considerable success in the States were largely ignored at home, Foghat are a classic example. The 3 disc collection starts on Disc 1 with 'Long Live Rock'n'Roll' by Rainbow and Disc 3 ends with 'God Gave Rock and Roll To You'. Sums it all up perfectly.
