Not a good book
This book is not good if your starting out. I got this thinking it would be a good follow along but the author doesn’t teach. He jumps around too much and assumes you know everything. It’s a good thickness for stacking and setting a monitor on.

An informative but passive learning experience
The author is clearly well-versed in his craft and does a good job of contextualizing the fundamental Java concepts within a relatable use case : coding a text adventure game. Unfortunately the book is not structured in such a way that encourages the reader to develop and test his own code as he goes along . My enjoyment of it came to an abrupt end when I was "shown" my first code block that I could not write and execute myself, because it leveraged user classes that had not been shown or explained yet. Eventually, the author does explain exactly what code he used to produce his own game, as well as his thought process. But I think I speak for many others in the intended audience when I say this is not how I learn.
