My cosponsor for CoDA and I have worked with this workbook once a week for the past 13 months and we are only on page 128! For people with traumatic backgrounds, we bring so much baggage of bad boundaries into our everyday lives in our relationships with coworkers, friends, lovers, and family members. This is an *excellent* book. It's worth your time and trouble for the tools you'll learn.

This was the book I needed, but didn't know it until I started reading it.

I personally have set up bad boundaries for myself and it has taken years for me to figure them out. I was being used by so called "friends", my bosses, etc. all the time. This book really helped me to figure out more of them in an easier fashion than the way I was doing things. I also really needed and enjoyed the sections about children. I have a five year old who is already pushing boundaries as much as she can. This book is a great tool with so much useful information, be ready to take some notes and highlight areas along the way.

I feel like this book was written for me! My siblings and I grew up in a home where one parent was an active alcoholic, the other probably borderline personality disorder. We were raised to be people-pleasers. Three of us married abusers. We did not know our own feelings and did not develop our own individuality. This book has given me a lot of help and hope. It's very practical and action-oriented. It contains many examples that help me understand the concepts. Setting boundaries is an essential life skill which many of us just never learned. My parents and grandparents never learned this either - they were also overwhelmed by the cycle of trauma and addiction. It would be wonderful if children could learn about this in school! We were sent out into the world without knowing how to set or enforce appropriate boundaries with other people. At 65 years of age I am learning how to take proper care of myself! I'm grateful for this wonderful book. It's a life-changer!

Best guide for building quality boundaries

I am a big fan of Sharon Martin and have also read her workbook on Perfectionism; both are top notch. Sharon has a Masters degree in Social Work and has worked for over 20 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She knows her stuff and has extensive experience as a guide too. With that she writes her books in a way that anyone with a high school education can understand. This allows her to reach a very large audience. I wish I would have read this book 40 years ago. Boundaries are about letting others know how you want to be treated; standing up for yourself. Sharon also goes into reasons why people struggle to set boundaries and what boundaries are not. Boundaries are not about being mean, punishing or controlling. When people know what you like/don't like and know what you find acceptable it allows others to be more comfortable around you and interact more easily. People with quality boundaries are happier and more compassionate. Creating good boundaries requires assertive communication which can be learned and practiced. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is about knowing thoughts control actions and behaviors. Managing your thoughts is the key to creating a happier future. Sharon provides lots of sheets that can be downloaded and used to record your thoughts. Getting thoughts out of your head and and onto paper or into electronics so they can be evaluated is important. You can develop new responses for the future. Boundaries are for your safety and personal protection. Sharon also gives guidance for how to deal with people who repeatedly violate boundaries. Some boundaries are negotiable others are not. I highly recommend this book. I purchased this book from Amazon 12/17/2021 (Order# 113...5407)

One of the best authorities on boundary setting. Lots of great takeaways and some simple exercises as well. Love Sharon Martin's work. It's like talking to an old friend.
