The Grid: The Decision-making Tool for Every Business (Including Yours)

A must read for anyone working in business or thinking of starting one!
Having read the grid thoroughly I am deeply impressed with this book. I had also read the author's first book and was impressed. The author goes into a lot of detail in the thought process between why he says things should be the way they are. These include references through out the book to writings from the titans of business theory such as Drucker, Porter and the more practical guys such as Munger and Buffet. Practical examples of real businesses are also used to demonstrate how the grid would have provided valuable insights if used by those businesses correctly. As someone who works actively everyday in business development for services I learned a lot from reading this book, particularly the sections on pricing and intellectual property. I think for someone who is inexperienced in business or considering starting their own business this is a great book to read and understand that a business is a holistic entity where everything needs to be kept in balance and a too great a bias on one part will erode your value and therefore profits from another direction.

Simple: If you run a business you need this book!
This does not read like your regular boring business book. It feels like Matt Watkinson is sitting across from you, walking you through all the fundamental and advanced aspects of every part of your own business in person. Here's the crazy thing: while you are getting the education of a lifetime and becoming an expert yourself, you are also being entertained – Matt is a genius with a thorough sense of humor. If you are reading The Grid and are not having a serious light-bulb-moment every few pages, you're probably ready to write your own book.

Practical. Use as much or as little of the tool as you like to determine the "what", the "so-what" is up to you.
The Grid is to strategic planning frameworks what Agile was to software development - an elegant yet practical decision making tool for use by any leader required to make strategic tradeoffs at the pace competing successfully in the digital economy demands.

A refreshingly open minded framework for business strategy
A grounded framework for approaching the complexities of business processes which deftly avoids neologisms and dogma. I wish I had a time machine so I could read this 20 years ago.

To the non inspired, firstly this book is a great read! The "Grid" is probably like the sun, you choose the rays under which you want to walk. You might have to walk a few times to get the right.

A clear guide and curated syllabus for learning how businesses work
If you’re a strategist looking to move disciplines, or broaden your business knowledge, Matt Watkinson has created the perfect guidebook. We all have own biases.Planners are invariably brand-centric, designers typically default to customer-centricity, and traditional strategy consultants often struggle to see outside the boardroom.Yet businesses are inherently complex systems and clients are short-changed when we fail to appreciate the bigger picture. The Grid is a few different things: a framework for thinking about this bigger picture, a systematic exploration of the ways firms create value, and a call to arms for more systems thinking in business. But most of all, I think the real value of the book is as a platform for learning.Matt has created a clear guide and curated syllabus for learning how businesses work, with different levels of depth that help the reader dive in and out: from the nine-box framework, to the 27 factors detailed throughout, 100+ examples and a Recommended Reading list that is worth the price of the book alone. It's the antithesis of the padded-out PDFs in the ‘Smart Thinking’ section of Waterstones.I promise you’ll be a more rounded strategist and a better client partner after reading it.

A must-read for anyone involved in any kind of project, who wants it to succeed
As an experienced UX Designer I have been using Matt Watkinson's first book, The 10 Principles Behind Great Customer Experiences, as a basis for my design approach for some time now. Because of his friendly, accessible tone and real-world examples, it's been easy to put these principles into practice to the point that they are ingrained in all that I do.Therefore, as someone who now manages two businesses and leads numerous projects each year, I was thrilled to pick up his latest endeavour. As I worked through the book I found myself nodding along to common problems so many of my projects have faced, which of course I'd never really considered - because it's 'not my job', and because I didn't have a good enough understanding to be able to.I think that many people reading this book will find that there's one or two chapters that they know well, and the remaining chapters a fascinating and informative look into all of the other component parts that make up both projects and business ventures. I finished my first read-through already with actions in mind as to how I could improve my business operations, and am now referring back to the appropriate chapters to guide my way through implementation - as well as recommending this to the rest of the board! To conclude, I would recommend - and I have been recommending - this book to anyone in any role on any project. While incredibly useful for anyone trying to run a business (large or small), it's also fantastic to help you consider, and support, all the other puzzle pieces that need to fall into place for a successful project.
