In the previous volume, the crown Jewels -- really fish -- of the Tocks had been stolen. The Tocks were willing to wait until the person who took them realized his mistake. The human colonists on Haven IV were more excitable. The colonists on Haven IV summoned Knave to solve the mystery. When he got off his ship, he was met by three people. They wanted to tell him about the problem, but he insisted on setting the fee and establishing the rules. Gorgial argued with him, but Knave asked if she wanted to solve the problem. Benson agreed with Knave. Pollorine mentioned a reward and Knave negated that idea. He was told that the Crown Jewels on the Tocks were a special king of fish. They lived for centuries and glowed on occasion. They were lifted from under the noses of two Tocks. While the diplomats were briefing Knave, another man entered the terminal and announced that General Tal had been assassinated. They were driven to the Embassy in an official car. Chan briefed him on the way, with some remarks by Gorgial. In this novel, Gerald Knave is a Survivor. Jerry stays on planets for a standard year, solving problems and taking notes. Occasionally he is hired to solve other problems. The Master is a Consultant for just about anything. He has known Knave since his recruitment as a Survivor. It had been discovered among items brought back from a dig into Norman's shelter in Uta. The Ravenal Scholarte had checked the carbon-14 isotopes to determine it was from the right time period. After the testing, it had been added to the collection in the First Files building. Later, Mac had paid for a full examination of the isotopes and it proved to be deficient. The copy was declared to be a counterfeit. The police had investigated the theft and had not found the thieves. They didn't have a clue about the theft. Besides, who would want to steal a false copy of a nonexistent story. Knave wants to see the scene of the crime. B'russ'r shows him around the room and describes the circumstances. Then Knave talks to Mac about the extended examination of the work. Mac takes Knave to a meeting of the Misfits. Two of the archaeologists at the dig are members of the club. Knave questions Bitsy and Dean about the dig. He learns the location of the site and the items retrieved. He also finds out that the books were placed in a sealed drum filled with nitrogen and argon. Later, Knave talks to the rest of the dig team. Somebody shoots at Knave again. Then he is summoned to another shooting incident. Someone has shot Ramsay on his balcony and he had fallen to his death. Meanwhile, Knave coordinates with the police. Gross was in charge of the theft of the counterfeit manuscript. He had also investigated the shooting of three Berigots who worked at the library five years ago. This tale doesn't make sense to Knave. The Master doesn't think so either. Robbin says that the leader is someone known to Knave. Jerry makes a list of everyone he has talked with on Ravenal. Knave also remembers something important about the case. The next installment in this sequence is The Alienist . Highly recommended for Janifer fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of mysterious thefts, senseless murders, and a bit of advanced technology. Read and enjoy! -Arthur W. Jordin Review: Just in case anyone hasn't read the other reviews, this story is NOT written by Heinlein, nor did he contribute in any way. It's a fun if slightly clunky read; as sci-fi it doesn't really make you think about the reality it depicts, which leaves you kind of unsatisfied at the end, like having potato chips for dinner. As a detective story it ain't Agatha Christie but the contrivance is subtle enough that the resolution isn't obvious. But it has a good beat and it's good to dance to. I give it an 85.
