Does this product have a petroleum base?

The jar says it has a petroleum, lanolin, cocoa butter and wax base.

Does this work on jock itch ?

This is excellent for viral infection "cold sore". Although I do not know the answer to your question but scientifically it will not work on jock itch! That would need an anti fungal such as Cortizone-10 or if a female family has a Vagisil you could use that.

Does this help prevent cold sores if you apply before onset of one developing?

This stuff is amazing. In the 4 years I have been using it, I only got one cold sore recently, but upon using it a couple hours after realizing I had one coming on, it prevented it from growing big and turning ugly and crusty. Only didn't put it on right away because I was heading to the airport when I realized the bump. Luckily I brought it on my trip. Other times when I felt like I had one coming, I put it on immediately and none ever materialized.

Wouldn't the petroleum prevent the lysine from being absorbed?

This seems to work, so i'm guessing that the answer is "no" ; and also, the other (more popular?) brand i use contains petroleum jelly as it's main medium. Look at other options and see what you find.
