Organic Chemistry, Binder Ready Version 2nd Edition

I have a copy of the first edition (previously reviewed) and the corresponding student solutions manual and bought this 2nd edition for a friend who needed it for her college course. There a couple of ways to teach organic chemistry; I think this book is the best book on introductory organic chemistry I've seen. Problems are presented in a continuous fashion via "skill builder" examples as you read along. With the emphasis on the chemical bonding structure of organic molecules, a very large number of figures are presented. There is a very large number of figures and diagrams that are colored so that the reader can clearly see the shapes of different types of bonds and where the molecule has polar (or charged) bonds. The explanations of the concepts are clear and concise. At the end of each chapter more problems are presented in the traditional fashion.I highly recommend purchasing the Student Study Guide and Solutions Manual because you need to do the problems to understand the subject matter. For technical/math subjects, I usually recommend that students get a copy of Schaum's Outline to supplement a science/math text book. In this case - this is the better option because the problems are specific to the text.

This is probably one of the best O chem textbooks I've found. The topics are explained succinctly but with enough depth to convey the knowledge well and the practice problems in the book are a perfect way for students to learn the material by doing it. If you're going to get this i highly recommend that you also get the solution manual to with it because if you're going to do any of the problems in the book, its good to be able to check your answers.This is a great textbook whether or not you have a good professor or not. You can learn everything you're going to need to know from the book alone if you had to and its fairly well written and well structured. The pace is good and its honestly one of the best textbooks i've had to get for a class.

I bought this book with the solutions manual. Combined they are excellent coverage of the topics. I also used Kleins Ochem as a second language. I taught myself Ochem using the textbook and solutions manual, which you will probably have to because most Ochem teachers are terrible. It made Ochem super easy and low stress because I did all the problems and read all the explanations of the answers.

I'll let others review the book. I'd like to say thank you to Mortuus Books. After a slight mix up, I contacted Mortuus by email, and received the most outstanding customer service. Amazon should use them as a model for other vendors! Yes, it was that good. The mix up entailed my receiving the wrong book. Within a day of notifying them I had the correct book in hand. We are living in uncertain times with this pandemic, and this is back to school season so a mistake is bound to happen. I had to get this book for Organic Chem I and II for college. It's an extremely useful book with a lot of practice problems and explanations for organic chem material. The actual concept explanations can be vague at times and not well communicated like the example problems. I think it's overall helpful since the teacher can't always answer ALL of your questions so the book answers most. It's great reading the book, going/listening to lecture, and then asking the professor because more often than not, the answer to your question will either be in the book or said in class. I wish they put naming compounds all at once over spreading it out over several chapters in the textbook. There are a lot of little, uninteresting tidbits for my taste. I just like reading what I need to or should know.

As a graduate Environmental Chemist, I wanted to look back into one of my favorite subjects at college. It was a great surprise how friendly this text is compared to 10 year old textbooks. Its like the author is you teacher and is directly speaking to you. I asume you will study along with the text your teacher recommends, if its this one, excellent choice. If you need a very clear Organic Chemistry text to compliment the one you do not understood, pick this one. Thumbs up!

I would say that this is probably the best chemistry textbook I have used. There are a massive amount of practice problems with really nice difficulty scaling and the alkane reaction chapter is marvelously written. Making my own notes with this book was a real treat since I consider myself horrible at making my own notes independently, but this time I feel it worked out really well due to how the chapters were structured were each section was a complete idea flushed out instead of being given a half-baked explanation that is clumsily unfolded for the remainder of the chapter.

I am fairly upset with how amazon handled my rental. The book took a little time to come in, and when it did, it had duck tape on it. This was not too much of an issue as the duck tape did it's job of keeping the book together. I hardly used the textbook as my organic chemistry professor found many issues with this textbook ,including poor explanations for basic Ochem rules of elimination and substitution reactions. That being said I used the textbook only a handful of times. When I turned in the textbook it was " rejected" because of front cover damage. I am very frustrated as I am now out of over $200 for a textbook that was poorly written that came to me already damaged! This was the first time I have rented from them, and I feel like I was set up to pay for this book. I also want to add that although the textbook had duck tape, it was not falling apart, it was still very usable, which is why I didn't return it when I initially got it. It's as if amazon pawned it off on me. Do not get this textbook from amazon, because you will end up paying for it. Also this textbook is not the best for students new to organic chemistry as many of it's explanations contradict other texts, and this is confusing for many students. I will add photos once the textbook is sent back to me.

I am a scientist at heart and opted to do a career in physics/engineering. The fact is that I did not like the courses I took in chemistry back in college, which probably weighted on my choice of career path. Looking back at it and especially looking at the chemistry books I used (I kept them...), it is now obvious to me that the books available at the time were not made to attract the young minds.It occurred to me later in life that one really needs a good knowledge of chemistry principles to understands everyday's life phenomena. After a search for book recommendations, I purchased this book from David R. Klein. I found it to be extremely well written. The emphasis is on developing skills on the various topics that are presented. Therefore there are plenty of exercises presented after every new topic is introduced and also numerous additional exercises at the end of each chapter. There are plenty of color illustrations to better present the principles. I also bought the student solutions manual (used, previous edition but covers 90% of the exercises of the next edition anyway) and found it very useful to verify my comprehension. I would definitely recommend this book.

Great figures and simple descriptions

This book explains concepts clearly and simply as other reviews stated. It's given me a greater understanding of organic chemistry and I'm really glad i decided to buy it. Plus it has practice questions which help you remember the information learned.
