Do these generate energy only when the hot side is heated/cold is cooled or both?

Theoretically, creating the temp differential, however you do it, should generate. Expect to need a 30° side to side difference before you usefully generate.

do these require a cooling fan? will they withstand 2,000 degrees farenheight?

They do require a cooling fan. However these are not capable of what they are specked to run. These were shorting out at 3v 1.5 amps and that was with a heat sink and fan attached. They work great for about 5-10 mins and then pop and both sides get instantly hot. I would look for another source from a more reliable source. I ordered some from TEtec and they have been working amazingly!

What size heatsink do you need to use for the 12706 module?

Heatsink requirements are somewhat dependent upon application and current value and duration of applied current. To demonstrate the action of this device I have a heatsink salvaged from a computer's microcontroller. Its dimensions are 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" x 1 1/2". I used a thermal conductive adhesive to adhere the Peltier device to the heatsink. The cooling side of the device is exposed in order that it can be touched to demonstrate its cooling ability. Dissipating heat away from the hot side of this device is paramount to is cooling performance. In my application of this component I am incorporating circulating water to enhance heatsinking performance.

I am planning to use about 6 of these for a project. I wonder how we can verify quickly if each of the chip is performing based on specifications?

Thermopeilters are much more efficient at lower power. They are optimal around 9-10 volts and will produce the most thermal energy transfer units per watt. Any higher than that and we encounter a decrease in thermal energy per watt as the modules must counteract the thermal gradient. Our thermal solutions can be likewise reduced in capacity, complexity, and cost as the thermal gradients are more diffused and easier to manage.

You could easily make a refrigeration unit, using 18v nominal solar panels, and by having parallel sets (2x modules in series) and they will balance and spread the load between them. You can get more performance per module running at higher voltages, but 9-10 volts will be the most effective use of our power. = )
