A good start
If you are poultry curious, reading this book is a nice start.I don't know much chicken lore, but this all seems to make sense. It would benefit from proof reading and fact-checking.A sample error: "there are about a billion chickens in the world any given time." (Chap. 1, par. 2). There are, in fact, almost 26 billion chickens in the world. That syncs more closely to the approximate 3.5 chickens per human ratio immediately following the above statement. However, I believe most of their facts about chickens cone from personal experience and scholarly efforts.Clearly, the writer(s) love their chickens. You don't have to love your birds to raise them humanely, but it would help. They can be noisy and fussy to take care of, and it may seem like more work than it's worth if you lack the empathy and commitment needed. If you&'re undecided on whether you want to have chicken, this book can help you get an understanding of the effort you will need to put in if you have any chickens. You'll need to have a sheltered place for them to roost and nest, an area for dust baths, you'll probably need to feed them at least part of the year, and possibly supplement their diet the rest. If you're raising chickens for meat, you're going to have to kill them (pro tip: don't let the kids name them!) Many dogs, cats, and wild animals think chickens are delicious, you will need to protect your girls. The odds are good that there is much more to learn about proper chicken husbandry than can be contained in any one book, but this one can get you off to a good start before you dive in.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Great book for potential, new, and even experienced chicken owners!
I'm going to start by saying I am not a new chicken owner. I have raised chickens for years. My patterns, both sets of grandparents, great grandparents, and I'm sure many generations before raised chickens. However, reading this book was a joy. I found that for all my experience, there was still information I did not know. This book was also just fun to read! It was the prefect balance of information and humor, which made it both easy and enjoyable to read. I would recommend this to anyone who is considering raising chickens, or even those who already do. We should never stop learning!

excellent guide to raising backyard chickens
this is by far the best book i've found on raising backyard chickens. it covers pretty much everything you need to know before and while starting out.one and basically only frustration i have is that there no pictures, even line drawings, of the different breeds. i get the expense and added work for using graphics in a for print book but it should relatively easy to add graphics to a ebook, and it would enhance the verbal descriptions a lot. maybe it's just me but even the most detailed description doesn't quite do it for me. don't get me wrong, the book is excellent and informative and pictures would only enhance it.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Wow! Who knew chickens could be so complicated!
My neighbor raises chicken pets and we took care of them one weekend which got me interested. When I received a free copy from Booksprout to review, I was stoked! As I read, I was impressed at how informative and well written it is, as well as humorous and interesting! Easy to understand all of the ‘chicken chat’, too! It has everything you would need to know to start raising chickens- including food, supplements, social interaction, coops, diseases they can get, eggs, grooming, etc. A bit daunting to me, but I think I could do it if I followed this fantastic book! Hopefully, the book will include pictures, that is the only thing missing!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

An intro good for you and your chickens
While I can’t raise chickens where I currently live, I’d like to someday. This book gives a great deal of useful information in a clear and entertaining manner that makes the idea of chicken raising not quite so daunting. I just wish my father-in-law had this book when he tried to raise chickens… the chickens probably wish he had as well (R.I.P. chickens).I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
