Q: is the purpose of this to allow me to connect an external fan to increase airflow? or to vent the warm exhaust outside? thanks!

It will connect to either input or output fans. In my case, I connected to the input fan, drawing cold air from outside directly into the Antminer. The warm air can stay inside to help heat. Come summer, I'll just connect the same ducting to the output, forcing the hot air outside.

Q: What temperature do these start to warp and melt at? Are these suitable for mining in hot climates?

I use them on the exhaust end of my Antminer S9s. They do not warp or melt, even when the air temp is 90F.

Q: Will this stand the heat of the exhaust from my portable home generator?

No. Mine melted a bit with just the miner.
