Great product. Crummy documentation.
I purchased this device for a project to clone 30 PCs.Prior to this I purchased a $100 1:1 NVME cloner. That worked for the most part, but some copies gave me the blue screen when I booted them up. That device has no way to compare the copy with the original and I got the feeling that some bits got misplaced. The first EZDupe that I received didn’t work. The fan came on but there was no on-screen display. The replacement unit works fine.My only problem is the horrible documentation. The unit comes with a one-page Quick-Start guide but it doesn’t say which slot is the source. That info is nowhere on the manufacturer’s website either. Kind of important to know. THE SOURCE IS THE UPPER LEFT SLOT.Once I figured this out everything went great. Once you switch the unit on, insert your source SSD and the target SSDs (however many you want). WAIT FOR THE BLUE COUNTDOWN TIMER TO FINISH. Then select one of the four functions, Format, Copy, Compare, or Erase. I found that sometimes I had to turn the unit off and back on between functions, like Copy and Compare. Not a big deal. The green lights on the unit above each SSD will start flashing. My SSDs had red LEDs that flashed too.For the following test I used 500MB NVME M.2 SSDs with Windows 10 and Office installed. Total data on the SSD was about 43GB.FormatThe manufacturer’s website says that if the SSD is under 2GB it will be formatted as FAT16. From 2GB to 32GB will be FAT32. Over 32GB will be formatted to exFAT. There is no way to choose any other file systems or formatting. Formatting seven drives took about 12 seconds.CopyEZ Dupe says, “The unique Source Analysis feature identifies the content on the master and intelligently copies only the data to speed up copy cycle.” Copying my source to seven empty SSDs took 30 minutes. Copying a source that was slightly different (just a driver and a small Windows update) took 28 minutes. So in my case the difference was small, but I only had 43GB of data to copy. It’s nice that you don’t have to format or erase the target disks before copying. EZ Dupe says this does a bit-by-bit copy and that seems to be true.CompareComparing 8 SSDs (the source and seven clones) took 22 minutes. When I put in my one marginally-different copy and selected Compare, the indicator light above that SSD immediately turned red, showing that one was not like the others. The EZ Dupe probably saw the data size difference and flagged that right away. I can see this being very handy when you can’t remember what’s on a particular SSD or you got a few mixed up. Letting the cycle complete insures that the copies are perfect.EraseErasing seven SSDs took five hours. There is no documentation telling what kind of erase is done. Since Format takes only a few seconds, I’m guessing that this is some kind of secure erase, but that’s just a guess. I submitted the question on Amazon to EZ Dupe so we’ll probably have that answer soon.ValueIt does what it says. You can clone SSDs with far less expensive devices. Seven 1:1 copiers would cost half the price of this unit but would take you longer (and you’d need seven source SSDs). For my project of 30 PCs the ease of copying and the Compare function made it worth the price. I’ll be cloning more in the future and having a few spare clone SSDs in-hand to swap out on PCs that people mess up is going to make my management team very happy.I would have given this product four stars because of the lack of documentation but if you read this review, you have that info you need so the unit gets 5 stars and EZ Dupe owes me a star.
