Accept no substitute
Yes, they're pricey. What is consistently, reliably and efficiently filtered water worth to you? We use ours to filter well water that has, at times, very high iron or sulfur content. These filters work like none other to remove everything you want gone, and the result is clear water that is more refreshing than an ice-cold cola. And remember, that filtered water is making your ice (or should be!)We tried cheaper once, and "paid the price." Bite the bullet, pay the price, and enjoy the benefit. Your coffee will never taste better!

Simply The Best
In my self educated opinion, these are simply the best. Not the cheapest..... the best.

An essential tool
I live in a very rural area where the ground water seems to contain more iron than actual h2o. In order to exist here, one must have a serious whole house water filter, which I do. But in order to maintain safety, I use the above filters for drinking water. I can safely say that the end result is that I get years of good fresh h2o without worries of any contamination whatsoever. I do test the water periodically just to make sure. Thank you so very much for creating a life saving product.

Considering suing the company
I have been poisoning myself by relying on these filters. I noticed the NYT found that the filters only work for about 1,000 liters. I had heavy iron deposit in my tap water, I did not realize how bad it was. I was always filtering my water with these filters for the last two years. For the last few months I have been getting sick. Went to the doctors and they found I had high iron, generally a sign of liver failure. I got home and looked in the Berkey and noticed rust silt in the top section. While the silt was not making it to the bottom, I strongly believe a substantial amount of iron was getting into my drinking water. I stopped using it and started buying bottled water, this is the only thing in my life I have changed, and now my iron levels have gone back to normal and I am feeling better. I'm not completely better though, and if I don't get better I'm going to sue. They aren't NSF certified and they give BS reasons for not doing it. It's sad really, considering the price of these things you would hope they were at least honest, and based on the NYT testing and article and my personal experience it looks like they aren’t. You can get a Lifesaver Jerry Can for about $100 bucks less, it's more work, but it works. I also think if your using this for tap like I was a ceramic filter might have done a better job at getting rid of the metals, but I should probably just go RO for my situation.
