Frank Capra adapted a hit stage play for this marvelous screwball meeting of the madcap and the macabre. On Halloween, newly married drama critic Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant, cutting loose in a hilariously harried performance) returns home to Brooklyn, where his adorably dotty aunts (Josephine Hull and Jean Adair, who both starred in the Broadway production) greet him with love, sweetness . . . and a grisly surprise: the corpses buried in their cellar. A bugle-playing brother (John Alexander) who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, a crazed criminal (Raymond Massey) who’s a dead ringer for Boris Karloff, and a seriously slippery plastic surgeon (Peter Lorre) are among the outré oddballs populating Arsenic and Old Lace, a diabolical delight that only gets funnier as the body count rises.BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew, restored 4K digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrackNew audio commentary featuring Charles Dennis, author of There’s a Body in the Window Seat!: The History of “Arsenic and Old Lace”Radio adaptation from 1952 starring Boris KarloffTrailerEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by critic David Cairns

You'll laugh till you cry
This movie is hilarious! Cary Grant is at his comedic best as a misogynist who wants to marry, after preaching to the world of how foolish marriage is. He lives with 2 aunts who are pure sweetness and light, and a cousin who is nutty as a fruitcake. He comes home, after dodging reporters, to tell his family of the marriage. While preparing a feast, a creepy secret the aunts have is exposed. Cary is floored. His new bride is getting impatient, as Cary keeps ignoring her or sending her away. When Cary hits on a solution, his evil, long lost brother turns up. And he came with guests. The nutty cousin--who thinks he's Roosevelt--constantly blows on a bugle. This brings police, which the evil brother doesn't want. The climax will have you cramped with laughter. Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre, and Jack Carson are just a few of the actors in this laughter riot. And it's captioned.

One of my families fav movies!
I love this movie. I have since I was a kid. There's no cursing or unnecessary explicit scenes. It's a good old fashioned comedy with not so much horror. Give it a chance. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Audio is only on one track....
This is a great movie, but would be better if they had copied the left channel to the right channel, thus getting the same audio in each channel. If using a headphone to listen, the sound is only in the left channel, and I'm nearly deaf in my left ear. NOT GOOD.

Arsenic, Old Lace, and Blu-ray.
The Criterion Collection releases on Blu-ray the much requested and long overdue1944 Frank Capra directed comedy classic "Arsenic and Old Lace" from Warner Brothers Studios, which had released the ancient 1999 snapper case DVD, now including actual extras like the theatrical trailer and an audio commentary by author Charles Dennis, plus a radio adaptation from 1952.Based on a famous and successful stage play about the murderous Brewster family who live in Brookyln, New York, two elderly though lovable aunts (played by Josephine Hull and Jean Adair) who poison lonely old men and bury their bodies in the basement, crazy uncle Teddy (played by John Alexander) convinced he is former President Teddy Roosevelt, and newly married Mortimer Brewster (played by Cary Grant) who discovers the bodies and frantically decides what to do, much to the confusion of his new bride (played by Priscilla Lane) Meanwhile, long lost black sheep brother Jonathan Brewster (played by Raymond Massey) and his doctor cohort Einstein (played by Peter Lorre) who are wanted by the police, all converge at the house on one memorable Halloween in 1941.Hilarious, superbly acted, written, and directed farce is one of the best ever comedies in film history, with some moments of real tension to fill out its 118 minutes runtime. Not to be missed, and has aged well.
