Great information.

Great book, cartoon format.

Not too useful...

I have all three of the perspective books. This book is more academic, in an art history techniques sort of way. Interesting to learn about but not that useful, at least not for me.

An Interesting Format For Complex Concepts

I was eager to receive a new art book, especially one that would explore the overlooked technique of perspective. At 169 pages, Perspective in Action by David Chelsea proved to be just the right length and style to hold interest.Chelsea explores “spatial representation from the Renaissance to the Digital Age” through a series of 7 exercises. Each chapter begins with a full-page introduction, which is followed with step by step instructions displayed in a graphic novel format.Perspective in Action is the third in a series of books on Perspective. In this third book, it appears Chelsea explores the more complex types of perspective, taking the reader into the world of anamorphosis perspective, six-point perspective, motion perspective, and more.Chelsea obviously knows what he is talking about, and balances humor with explanation, diagrams, and even traceable templates. His tone throughout the book is friendly, clever, and interesting.Despite this book being too complex for me, I found myself interested in what he had to say. The historical background of these concepts was presented in a way that was compelling and not at all boring. If you’re just starting out with perspective, don’t begin here. I was disappointed when I realized this was Chelsea’s third book, as I was expecting to find myself more at the starting line than at the finish line.As an individual that struggles with math concepts, this was not a useful place to begin. Despite being no friend of math, I found I was interested enough to read to the end. Chelsea helped me peer into a world that is a bit too complex for me, but encouraged me to see that one day, I might just be able to conquer the math side of art.If you understand the basics of perspective and want to dive into these more complex techniques, I believe you’ll find Perspective in Action to be an enjoyable interactive primer on how to accomplish fascinating uses of perspective. If you’re looking for one-point, two-point, or even three-point perspective, you and I would both do better starting with Chelsea’s first book.Blogging for Books graciously provided me with a copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own.

An Educational and Informative Book

David Chelsea is an undisputed master of perspective. In his three books on the subject, he has very creatively and effectively used the monologue comic format pioneered by Scott McCloud to develop an invaluable set of tools for the beginning and developing artist. While the latest book seems like something of an afterthought to the preceding volumes, it is nevertheless a very helpful reference and more importantly, a creative challenge to the artist to further their perspective skills and use them in new ways.Chelsea imparts a lot of information in his books, but his easy narrative style makes them as much a pleasure to read as to study. With Perspective in Action, there's a fair dose of art history mixed in with the instruction, giving this volume a relevance and degree of interest beyond its tutorial aspects. Any reader who appreciates art, whether they are themselves an artist or not, will find something valuable and fascinating in here...but it is the artist who will get the full benefit of Chelsea's incredible perspective skills. This book, along with its preceding volumes, should have a permanent home in the reference library of any serious artist. I know they have a place of pride in mine.

While I enjoyed the detailed explanations and step by step procedures

The book Perspective in Action by David Chelsea is a very in depth book about how to draw perspectives. It goes through all of the detailed steps necessary to create various perspectives. It shows you how to calculate the perspectives using mathematical analysis. While I enjoyed the detailed explanations and step by step procedures, I was also impressed with the historical representation. The author examines every aspect of perspective. This is like the bible of perspective and needs a permanent place in any artist’s library. You can apply these perspective principles using any medium. The steps are often laid out in a comic book format which makes it funny sometimes and easy to follow. There are 33 easy to follow multimedia projects in this book for you to learn and practice. I highly recommend this book. More information on this book can be found here. And you can read more about the author, David Chelsea here.

Espectacular.

A bit smug and jokey

Some useful sections, but found the amusing asides a bit annoying. Some bits more complicated than they need to be with unnecessarily elaborate explanations. If you want author banter and the kind of bonhomie of 'perspective land' fine I just want the information.

Curioso, pero de aplicación restringida

Profundiza bastante en algunos aspectos poco divulgados. Resulta interesante, pero su aplicación se restringe bastante. En este sentido, resulta mucho más práctico su anterior libro de perspectiva.
