Great Christmas movie
Some movies you watch on Christmas Eve to get that in Christmas spirit. Some you watch on Christmas Day when you realize all of your presents kind of suck. This movie falls in the latter category. It has Phoebe Cates, which is great, but it could use more Phoebe Cates. Most of the movie takes place at night, so the dim lighting and rich colors give it lots of visual charm. It's like a 50s horror movie set in the 80s, with hints of social commentary about the West and capitalism.

Still my all-time favorite movie (especially for Christmas)
I'm a sucker for dark comedies. I'm a sucker for horror films. I'm a sucker for movies with lots of inside jokes. In other words, I'm dead center of Joe Dante's target demographic. This movie has it all. It starts out like an homage to "It's A Wonderful Life", then things start getting weird. Amid lots of cool cameos and typical Joe Dante background action (always watch what TV's are playing in the background of any scene in a Dante film), the film begins taking an ominous turn. Adeptly, Dante keeps his options open far past when you'd expect him to have to commit, so you're over halfway through before you know for sure whether it's going to be funny or creepy. The decision is signaled with the comic execution of the show's least likable character. From there, it's simply the funniest film ever made. I especially love the cameos - Chuck Jones, Steven Spielberg, Robby the Robot, the Time Machine (check out the background action in *that* scene!), "Show White", and the list goes on. The casting of both major and minor characters is perfect, with lots of recognizable veterans along with Joe Dante regulars such as Dick Miller. The deliciously evil mayhem of the gremlins themselves leaves no icon of popular culture untapped. Many have claimed that the sequel was better, but I have to disagree. For me, the contrast between the Capra-esque backdrop and the "What type of film is this?" treatment are what elevate it to greatness. The sequel lacked both qualities. It's also not going to be as popular with critics who like to be able to categorize any film within the first 15 minutes. I can't recommend it highly enough! I'd especially recommend it as the ultimate anti-Christmas movie for when it's late December and you're getting really burned out on forced cheerfulness. Update: Ok, after decades in the top spot, Gremlins has lost that honor to the Lord of the Rings trilogy (which I consider to be a single movie). Still, I've been watching movies for a half century plus, so 2nd place isn't too shabby! It still holds the record as the film I saw the most times in a theater - I paid for 12 tickets before I figured I'd caught enough of the gags going on in the background or periphery. Later update: If you consider the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy as a single film, or even the complete series of "Babylon 5", they have supassed "Gremlins" as my favorite. But "Gremlins" remains my all-time favorite single film - i.e. watchable in a single sitting.

Love it!
Love it. The first one that came was dented pretty badly, so I sent it back no problems. The second steelbook came 2 days later and was flawless. The movie looks great, not 4K but honestly I'm not sure that would help given the early 80s quality of the original footage. The features are what what you would expect, nothing more nothing less. Deleted scenes with commentary, behind the scenes featurette, two different movie commentares, trailers, and photo slide show. All of those are copied from the much older DVD release, hence 4 stars instead of 5. The steelbook art is beautiful - if it survives shipping and handling that is.
