Essential Mathmatics and Statisitcs for Forensic Science

This was a required text for my Forensic Statistics class. Initially, it was easy to ready, but as the Self Assessment problems were worked through, there were issues with the answers in the back of the book, which often wrong. There were also grammatical errors throughout the text and some of the formulas were wrong. Most professors wouldn't know until they get students asking them question about problems they cannot figure out. For students purchasing this text be aware, recheck your worked problems...for professors, you might want to rethink another text or hope the author comes out with a newly edited version.

I am starting my MA in forensic science and criminal justice in September. I needed to improve my maths for science skills and understanding. To do so I bought this book. Initially I was worried that it would be too technical.This book is not only fascinating in it's own right in how it applies the maths to the science, it is also fascinating in how itdoes that.Each subsection carefully describes particular mathematical principles and what these can be used for. It also show by worked examples and tells you how to do them stage by stage. The book then goes onto show how these are applied in forensic science.Well worth buying.

I bought this book to help me teach the increasingly popular L3 BTEC in Applied Science which specialises in Forensics, after I suddenly found myself teaching the three maths units and related research unit. This has been an invaluable reference book as it is full of examples of how Mathematics and Statistics are applied in Forensics, and has worked examples and exercises which can be adapted for classroom teaching at level 3. It has helped me feel much more confident in the classroom and given me the inspiration to create the practical activities that suit BTEC delivery.I would very strongly recommend this book to teachers of the Level 3 (and to lesser extent the Level 2) Forensics BTECs, and also to more able students who want to see the maths applied in context. Learners who are less confident with Maths, and are needing a book to support them in acquiring the skills at this level should, perhaps, look to a more general book as there are much better texts out there to explain the fundamental ideas. The strength of this book is not its ability to work as a basic primer for post GCSE, but the way it systematically gives relevant and interesting applications for Maths in Forensic Science.
