Q: I can see how the camera fits onto the rail, but how is it mounted onto a tripod? The other end is just a plain face with 2holes in it.

Hi Malcolm, The bottom block has a threaded hole that will fit onto a tripod, though I felt this might be a little top heavy, I don't know if you are intending to use this rail for macro work like me, but in case you are I will tell you that I separated the two rails as I only need to go forward and back. I then fixed the top rail that holds the camera to a base board via the threaded bush. This made the rig quite stable and rigid, I find this arrangement works well for me. If there is anything else you wish to ask, I would be happy to help.

Q: How much will the rail move for every full turn of the knob?

Rail movement for one revolution of knob is 30mm.

This serves two purposes when mounted on a tripod, particularly for macro photography. Firstly it allows you to precisely position the camera & lens to get the desired image size, and secondly it allows you to move the camera to get precise focus. You can set the focus manually with the lens but the adjustments on the rail allow much finer control so you can find precise focus much more easily.

Q: Could this be used to get the lens axis nodal point over the tripod centre to prevent parallax problems in multi shot panoramas? Thanks

Possibly although it'll make the tripod back heavy, but I see no reason that would stop you using this to wind the camera back so the lens is centred over the tripod centre
