Does the veg/safety holder have metal spikes? The machine looks very similar to other makes but they show metal prongs on the veg/safety holder.

Yes there are metal spikes which skewer the veg keeping it in place while you use the machine

One reviewer states that the blades went blunt after a few weeks, is this the case? How does one sharpen them? Thanks.

Just read that review and it certainly is not my experience. I slice potatoes and carrots quite easily, if you julienne them yo do need a little more force but not much.
