Fantastic product
Use this with a Rode NTG3 and a Rode carbon fibre boom pole, single shooting with the boom attached to a Boom Buddy. Indoors I dispense with the blimp and just use the pistol grip with a foam cover to get the weight down a bit. Outdoors this really does come into it's own, with perfect wind reduction using the supplied dead wombat. An adjustment tool is included along with a folding brush to touch the dead wombat up a bit - you need it to have the hairs standing up, which is a bit counter intuitive to brushing your hair. Well, for me at least :)

Great value blimp
This is a great blimp for the price. Well made, well thought out. It is BIG but does the job it’s supposed to do. I don’t regret buying it but if I could turn the clock back knowing what I now know about how my workflow would change I’d have invested in the Rycote. Much more expensive but I think it presents more options.

Good Product
Does a very good Job at blocking the wind out! I'd struggle to fault it, only think I will say is that the connection on the handle can be a bit tricky to get the cable into - especially in the dark!

Bit overpriced
Deducted 1 star because of the price, this thing isn't exactly that solid for the money, the materials use are high quality but the overall design regarding durability and strength of the product isn't great. Mine also came covered in glue - see pictures

Excellent protection from wind noise
Even in fairly significant wind, dialogue can be recorded without distortion, and there is no noise associated with wind hitting the microphone. However, it is not windproof – high winds will get through and be picked up. In my personal experience, the blimp performs significantly better than the slide-on windshields. One thing to consider is that when you are using the dead wombat is that you will lose some of the higher frequencies, so you may want to engage the high frequency boost if your microphone has one, or to raise those frequencies in post. Alongside the windshield feature, the Rode Blimp is also a shock mounting system designed to isolate the microphone from handling noise. The blimp does a pretty good job of minimizing handling noise even from abrupt movement. The assembled blimp is pretty significant in size relative to the microphone itself, and so is a consideration for the amount of gear you need to bring out for your recording session. The integrated Blimp Pro Cable makes connection of an XLR cable simple. The shockmount can be used without the blimp housing for indoor microphone booming , although if it is to be moved between two people, the lightweight blimp housing can be used to eliminate possible generated air movement noise. Putting on the dead wombat requires some effort, as it has quite a snug fit. The entire blimp, without the microphone, weighs approximately 700g (320g handle, 220g blimp housing, 140g dead wombat), so the weight is something to consider if you have a lengthy shoot planned.

Solid but there is a caveat
This is a very well made blimp and considering its price around £200 it’s more than a great starting point for anyone wanting to get into boom operation. However, it is considerable heavier than many of its competitors which can become an issue over longer sessions. The lyres can easily adjust to fit various mic sizes. The issue comes with the lyres however, first they will break. Mine lasted about 2 years before breaking but that’s not the norm. I think they are a little flimsy considering the second issue. THEY ARE NOT USER REPLACEABLE. They use a system on rails that once they break you’ll be buying another whole blimp. You can get similar 3rd party replacements but they are not official and I can’t vouch for their quality and more often than not you’ll need to head to eBay for them. To be honest if you are serious about getting into sound get a Rycote blimp it will be £500 but then you can replace the lyres for £20 a pop after instead of the whole blimp every 2 years for £200

Top Quality Microphone Mount
Purchased this to replace a similar system that had broken. This one is very well designed, with a much sturdier mounting mechanism and a clever connector that facilitates fast cable substitution. The kit even includes a bespoke tool to make adjustments and comb to maintain the dead wombat.

Proper Kit!
Nice bit of kit, totally eliminates most wind noise, and no issues with handling noise either. Worth the money.

You're only reading this because you desperately want an honest review to see if this RODE Blimp can handle wind exceptionally well. WELL, let me tell you that it is beyond my expectation. The other day I was shooting a video after a storm had passed and the winds were still hovering around 20mph. Once I put on the 'Dead Wombat' the wind noise was literally cut down to nothing. At first I thought it wasn't working because shotgun mic (NTG2) was picking up the leaves falling and I thought it was wind....it was just that clear! The most important factor of this package is the DEAD WOMBAT (which is included and thank you RODE for doing that). This is and will be the only thing you have to stop the wind and it works flawlessly. You will need this in any high wind situation. All in all, if you're looking for a wind muff, a high quality shotgun mic holder or just a better (or the best) way to cut out the wind from your production, I cannot emphasize this next statement enough....BUY THIS.

If you are serious about doing outdoor video, you need this. While Youtube has videos of DIY versions, nothing can come close because both the mounting system and the exterior, wind-noise damping decrease or eliminate handling and atmospheric noise without decreasing the quality of the audio. Fairly expensive? Yes. Thoroughly worthwhile? YES!
