There’s more to life than one may think!
I loved this movie!! I had heard over the years that there was a book as well as a movie by the same name that was well worth watching. I have to say that although the story starts out slow and you wonder why this young man hangs around this horrible carnival and continues to help his ungrateful father with his job and seems to have lived a life that has little value when compared to many people in our fast passed and greedy world. But Eddie in the end of his life shows us all the importance of what living and giving to our fellow human beings is really all about!! It’s more than the Golden Rule. It’s learning that life is more than about being the center of attention. Eddie learns some beautiful life lessons that are passed on in this story/movie and the book about Eddie and the Five people you meet in Heaven. I would highly recommend it!

WONDERFUL, INSPIRING
Like George Bailey in It's A Wonderful Life, Eddie lives a life of quiet despair, unhappy with his dead-end job. But unlike George, who longed to go to war but couldn't, Eddie did and his war experiences affect the entire course of his life. I love It's A Wonderful Life, a masterpiece of film making, but narratively, The Five People You Meet In Heaven goes beyond it. It's also akin to A Christmas Carol, but surpasses it too, conceptually. I won't spoil it by saying how or why (you'll see)- I'll just say that, amazingly, it manages to capture the interconnectedness of us all, each affecting others with intentions and acts both good and ill, but ultimately there's "a certain symmetry" to it all (to borrow a line from The Big Chill). The series doesn't shy away from the darker side of human nature. How it all comes out in the wash is highly imaginative, moving, and very inspiring, thanks largely to writer Mitch Albom.I didn't care for the production values, the stark artificiality of the sets and lighting in some of the early scenes, e.g., of the dance grotto- didn't look authentic, the dancers' gaiety forced, the camera work odd; nor did the hair and makeup look quite right for the period- but these are minor quibbles, they improved as time went on. Later scenes were more realistic, and those that weren't intended to be were more detailed and pleasing to the eye, not bad for a lower-budget mini-series. The acting was excellent by all concerned but Jon Voight was GREAT- playing the character at different ages, in a few scenes playing himself as inwardly younger while still in Eddie's 83-year-old body! And Dagmara Dominczyk as his beloved wife was sublime- I could scarcely believe it was the same actress playing Marguerite from a teenager through middle-age, a very gifted actress.I teared up at several junctures during the first half of the series, and then pretty much blubbered non-stop through the second. For me all scenes were riveting, powerful and affecting, but the last two (especially the next to the last scene, totally unexpected) were SO cathartic and wonderful I could barely stand it. If you're a skeptic, or someone who thinks there's no rhyme or reason to life (beyond chaos theory perhaps) you might give this a miss, but for everyone else- don't miss it!! I bought it before viewing based on positive reviews, and in this case I was SO glad I did. A treasure.

Read the book firsthand!
Incredibly heart warming film based off of a book! Loved the book and the film followed it to the T with an ending adaptation. Loved it and cried at least 6 times.. haha had to pause to cry a few times.

Nice film, not brilliant.
Some one lent me the book many years ago and I found that to be very good. I like those type of books anyway. The film however did not live up to the same expectation. I found it quite slow, but I did enjoy it. John Voight was the glue that held it all together. He was good. It was quite thought provoking. In fact I enjoyed it so much, I have ordered the book to read again. The only thing I was disappointed in was the sound quality. The actors mumbled and sometimes the accompanying music to a scene was so loud I couldn't hear what was being said. Sadly there were no subtitles. They would have been really helpful.

Quirky film but entertaining.
Not a great fan of John Voight but to his credit he was the mainstay of the film and turned what was hinting at being a bit dull into something thought provoking.Unfortunately the plot suffered from lack of originality - copying large chunks of the ideas from James Stewart "Its a Wonderful Life".Having said all that - a pleasant way to spend an evening!E Sanderson

Dull
Very old fashioned quality and drags on too long. Better off watching on amazon prime for free and pausing every now and then so you can take a yawn! Book is 100 times better.

Cheerful little tale. 😆I'm sorry but i did not enjoy this sentimental tripe. Bought it because i'm a Jeff Daniels fan so was happy for the five minute's he was in it 😩😤 many may enjoy this film just not me.

Doesn't do the book justice
Didn't realise that this was aired on television in two parts, so it's much longer than a normal film! I bought this DVD because I enjoyed the book so much, but unfortunately it doesn't translate to film very well. It is a pleasant enough watch but not really very entertaining; it follows the book very closely, but without the lyrical prose and thoughtful issues that the book raised, it just makes for dull viewing.
