It’s a brilliant book, but, don’t buy it
I really enjoyed this. However kindle has most of the series, yet, for reasons unknowable , it doesn’t have book 2( about the main character Lestat)

Astoundingly good
Being familiar only with the Brad Pitt/Tom Cruise film, I was unprepared for the full richness of this novel. I may, in fact, have been smoothly dismissive of it. That is unfortunate, but now stands corrected. Rice's novel is an exquisitely rich and rewarding read, and strives in the end, to offer us something close to 'what it means to be human,' or 'what 8t means to be alive.' Lots of novels of the high literary sort attempt this, 9f course, and fall short. And if this novel doesn't achieve it, it isn't for want of Louis, the vampire who tells us of the terrible price he pays for immortality, hasn't tried!Along the journey with him, we're treated to the wild, borderline-genius imaginings of the author, whose story is so well-constructed that it pulls you along from one brilliantly plotted moment to the next, inexorably. I say 'plotted' but the events herein don't feel in any way fabricated, but natural l, balanced, profound and...beautiful in their own desolate way.If you haven't read it, devour this novel as if you are drinking from the fountain of youth. But beware -- the price of living is death. And it is death that gives it meaning, something immortality cannot provide!

Essential reading for any vampire fan, but no longer the book it once was.
In the words of Lestat: Stop whining Louis! The problem with creating a great, original work is that everyone copies you and, eventually, you look just as derivative as anyone else who writes about vampires for whom eternal life is a great torment they can only assuage via romance with children. I’m taking the piss a little bit (just a little, and mostly out of other books), but Anne Rice changed the vampire genre and, forty years later, thousands of words of Louis complaining of the agony that comes with killing is a little tired.I was in the forces; I can promise you there are people that kill and then sleep fine. It is absolutely something you can get used to. Plus, I’m totally ready to take a shot at living forever: there are plenty of men and women out there killing for a mediocre salary and a uniform, which is by any standard a much worse deal.Yet the passion in Rice’s first novel is still there. In later novels she becomes more professional, writes tighter script, but there is something to be said for the way she pours everything she has into Louis endless indecision, doubt and despair. Accept him as he is – as he tells you he is – a deeply flawed protagonist, indulge in some eternal adolescent anguish, and there is a lot to enjoy.Plus, this book is it. Without Interview with the Vampire you don’t have Buffy, you don’t have Twilight, you don’t have True Blood. If you are at all a vampire fan, then you must read this book.

An old school vampire novel
In my opinion this book feels a little dated and difficult to read (I didn't appreciate the lack of chapters). Very much an old school telling of the vampire story, though this is understandable considering its nearly 50 years old. Not much in terms of action, the story is more about emotions and philosophy. I was looking for more of a page turner. If you're a fan of the genre I'm sure there is something here to enjoy. If you're looking for an engaging, casual read I wouldn't recommend.

FANTASTIC READ
This first novel I read by Anne Rice was "The Mummy, Or Ramses the Damned" which I first read in 1992,(it's been read more then once). Then I noticed she'd written a series called "The Vampire Chronicles", and with being interested in that subject and enjoying the previous book I read by her I decided I'd buy the first 5 novels in the series.I'd already seen the film back in the 1990's, but couldn't remember much about it. Just before my books arrived the film was on TV again so I watched it again. The film left me with many questions, I felt there was a lot left out especially were the deaths of Claudia and Madeleine were concerned. After watching the film I started to read the novel. The journey begins in the 20th Century as a young lad is interviewing a vampire as he wants to tell his story so others will know. His name is Louis Pointe du Lac and as the interview unfolds we find out why he became a vampire and a about the vampire that made him who is called Lestat. But Louis is no usual vampire, he's different and Lestat doesn't like it.The interviewer asks all kinds of questions and Louis tells him of how he finds the child Claudia and why he makes her a Vampire. Lestat teaches them both about being a vampire; he keeps a tight hold on both Louis and Claudia which leads to arguments and death. Here I will leave the story as I don't want to ruin it for you.Anne Rice is a powerful writer; her characters are always believable and have great depth to them. Her descriptive work and plots are fantastic, and never disappoints the reader. :-)The story grips you from the start, and with every turn of the page she draws you further into the story, it's a compulsive and enjoyable read. :-)I highly recommend the book as it's far better than the film. :-)I'm now looking forward to starting the second novel in the series which is called "The Vampire Lestat", and I'll be starting that as soon as I've finished this review. :-)

Wonderful misery
This is a book I have read three times, the most recent nearly35 years after the first. He Ricean vampire is the progenitor of most vampires novels over the past 40 years, only Stoker having a larger impact on the genre. The characters are wonderfully described, their longings, passions, desires and pains all painstakingly brought to life. Although a must read for fans of vampire literature, the book is not an easy read. The protagonist is one of the most miserable creatures ever described.

beautiful, haunting, an absolute must-read
Such an amazingly good story, a true classic in every sense of the word. Heart-wrenching, haunting… you won’t want to put it down.

Anne Rice, the absolute Queen of the Damned!!
Beautiful edition, except for the "NOW A MAJOR TV SERIES" which almost ruins the design, it's like an annoying bug on the cover. A TV series that doesn't do any justice to the book.
