Thorough and respectful
If you enjoy books about Yale, you will love Skull and Keys. The author painstakingly explored the history of Yale's renown secret societies. The research is impressive--interesting stories fill each chapter. I wish he had interpreted his material a bit more--stand back and reflect on what it means, I would have told him.

A remarkable book. Meticulously researched and carefully documented. It is long, but the book not only relates the history of secret societies at Yale but weaves in history of the University itself as viewed through the prism of secret and not-so-secret societies. One major deficit, altho' not sufficient in my mind to warrant a downgrade, is the absence of a single illustration. The internet can be used to fill the gap, but it is puzzling that the author chose not to provide any pictures.

Skulls and Keys is a superb history of one of Yale's most storied institutions. Richards has provideda rich tour of these secret enclaves, which evoke both mystery and intrigue. This is the first trulycomprehensive work on the subject, and no stone is left unturned. There is rich material here, andRichards, a Yale man himself, is just the sort of person to do it. Skulls and Keys is engaging historyand Richards's research is impressive.
